AARP Alternatives

I've been a member of the AARP for a few years, primarily for the travel discounts I get. The discounts easily exceed the cost of membership. With them backing the dems health care bill I have called them to tell them that I will not be renewing my membership.

Does anybody know of other senior/retired persons organizations that may actually represent my views. Most hotels give discounts for "Membership in a senior or retired persons organization". That would imply there are groups out there other than the Association Against Retired Persons.

I know there are some other "mature" members here. Any input?

Just call a lot of motels and museums to ask them how many clubs they work with.

Triple-A hotel discounts are the same as AARPs. Plus you get road service.

AARP is a despicable organization that's in bed with the national teacher's union.

What's the national teacher's union all about?

I don't recall the specifics, but it was all laid out in the book "Worm in the Apple" which was an expose on the teachers unions. They are in bed together financially. Some of your membership fees goes directly to the NEA.

AARP is also a stridently anti-gun organization that also supports the major anti-gun groups like Brady and VPI.

I have always refused to be a part of that liberal gun hating organization, regardless of the savings.

NRA has discounts, though I'm not sure how they compare with AARP. I know the few times I've used the NRA for discounts I've been pretty surprised with how large the discount was. The lowest price I got with any of my discounts on my last car rental was with the NRA CDP#

I used to work for a hotel. Tell them when you call if they will match the AARP rate (or better) you will book it. You wont be turned away.

I canceled my AARP membership a few months back...didn't like their politics, and what they really are...a friggin INSURANCE COMPANY shill...all they ended up wanting was my $$$$

both of my parents killed their membership a looong time ago when they realized AARP was just a de facto lobbyist organization for the liberal agenda.

I'm liking AAA. Plenty of benifits with them.

Some great alternatives and suggestions! I'm glad I asked. Thanks and please keep the suggestions coming. There may be others that feel as I do. I see on the ASA site they'll give me my second year membership free for sending them my torn AARP card. I like the way they think already. I belonged to the AMA years ago but didn't realize membership could get me discounts. I wish they could get me more time to ride.

If your looking for stuff like hotel discounts when you're traveling, the only memberships you can really count on are either the AARP or AAA.

I just canceled my membership. It took about 30 minutes and 8 tries to get thru their switchboard to get it done. Please do the same and be sure to ask for a refund for unused service. Until they took this stand on health care, I wasn't aware of their stand on 2nd. ammendment rights. They don't give a flip about seniors. They are only interested in selling insurance. My guess is that they have been promised a piece of the action if this rip-off passes. Rant over.

You can get discounts on hotels, gear, rental cars, and other stuff with an AMA membership- AMA Membership Services Center . For an extra $35 a year, you can get roadside assistance, even if you are driving your car and not riding. Having said that, I still hate the AMA for letting the manufacturers make the rules and kill the two-strokes.:D
