Threading a Vepr Barrel

Recommended Posts

I have a Vepr K 7.62 x 39 which has a barrel diameter of .611". Instead of removing the barrel and having it turned down to accomodate a 14/1 LH thread. I was wondering if I could use a FAL 9/16 x 24mm LH (.562") tool and thread it myself. And then just use a FAL muzzle device. Would this work? What say you?

That should work. I would spend the money and have it done right though. 14/1 LH will give you way more muzzle device options. Veprs are very nice by the way.

Go over to the AK-47 forums on AR15.com, and ask about a 14-1 LH threading tool. There was a guy in FL who rented them to folks.

You put your name on the list. When your turn was coming up, you sent him the cash ($14, IIRC). The person who got it before you was told to ship it you when they were done. Once you got it, you had a week to thread your barrel and pass it on to the next guy in line. The instructions were included, as well as an instruction to inspect the tool for damage and notify him immediately if there was any, lest you be charged for it when the next guy reported the damage. He also asked that you only do guns you owned, and not your friends, as that kind of cut into his rental business.

For what you got, it was a pretty cool option. It was a lot cheaper than buying the tools or having a gunsmith remove the barrel. I sed it myself, to thread 3-4 barrels, right after the ban expired.
