So not to drift in another thread on something with an entirely different topic.... Strickj just pointed this out to me.

What kind of toolbox came up with this crap? Tennessee Consumer Use Tax Return.

Seems like the most greedy abuse of State Legislative taxing powers. I understand the burden of the local businesses to do business within the state of TN. I understand the burden of buying from a business in TN (9.5 % tax). But to try to pass the burden onto to the buyer who is just looking for the best deal around is low down. I'm sure some lobbying from TN businesses might have been behind this but the state is also greedy in an effort to raise revenue.

I got to ask.....is the state of TN monitoring your packages? How would they... can they.....oh never mind!

f them, like this is enforceable, if they want to collect tax for merchandise, they can make sure that the price including the tax is competitive with the neighboring states, otherwise they can suck it. this is just my opinion......

They could never enforce internet sales tax so it's up to you honest citizens to send in your fare share with no complaints.

lol, fair share is no more than 10% last time i did the math on what i pay out in tax was around 62% of all my income, i think they are getting more than a fair share, i am just waiting to see if i am ever gonna get my moneys worth out of the government, not holding my breath but still curious.

this has been on the books since long before the internet. The law is enforced, just not on everything. The states have aggreements to share the info that they receive from the interent sellers in their state to the states where it is shipped.

If you are buying a cd from amazon the $.80 is not worth the effort for the state to try and collect. If you buy a car, 4 wheeler, tv, etc, the hundreds of dollars are. The way the law is written, they simply have to send you a letter. If you choose not to respond, they can file charges.

There will soon be a fed law passed to charge income tax on internet and out of state purchases since every national retailer, headed by walmart, sees the current tax laws as affecting their businesses. Retailers can't help that the state they operate in charges the customer up to an extra 9.75% on everything they buy.

The state does monitor this. At a seminar I was at, by TN. Dept. of Revenue, they were asked what the dollar amount was that they looked for on out of state sales. The speaker declined to let us know.

major purchases are taxed if delivered to TN. For example. I live on the KY border. If I go there to buy furnature or appliances or anything that needs to be delivered to TN, they'll charge you TN tax.

If you pick the items up yourself... You pay KY tax.

One of these days.. I'm quite sure it'll be soon given the shape of every city, state, locality... you will pay tax on every purchase. As soon as they figure out a fair or accurate way for everyone to handle it.. it'll be.. you can bet the farm on that one...

Wouldnt NOT paying it be the equivilent of tax evasion even if they dont enforce it? And is that something we really want to have a thread on?

i live on the GA border same just the sales tax, delivery i am not sure about, since i have a tuck and can haul just about anything i need. but regardless i will not pay an additional tax for something this state didn't contribute to and it is essentially none of its business of who and where i buy goods from. i am free to make money where i choose to and equally free to disperse of it in the same manner.
