Fire Safe Cigarettes

I was delayed in the gas station this evening by a guy trying to sell back his carton of Winstons because "there was something wrong with them." He informed her that he had been smoking for 40 years and that there was something not right about these cigarettes. The clerk told him that they were fire safe cigarettes. Him and me both were like "WTF?" A little research led me to this site:Fire Safe Cigarettes :: Home - The Coalition for Fire Safe Cigarettes

As I have not not smoked in 18 months, this does not directly affect me, however, I found it kind of fascinating that there is such a large problem with accidental fires that legislation is required to save people from themselves. Maybe any firefighters can chime in here.

A buddy of mine is a fireman and a smoker and doesn't care for them. Take a long pause between puffs and it's out. He was explaining it to me one day but don't remember the details.

Cigarettes are a leading cause of home fire fatalities in the United States, killing 700 to 900 people - smokers and nonsmokers alike - per year.Smoking-material fires killed 780 people and injured 1,600 others in 2006. Eighty-nine percent of the deaths and 82 percent of the injuries were in home fires.

Property losses from smoking-material fires total hundreds of millions of dollars each year.

There were 30,400 smoking-material structure fires in the United States in 2006.

They keep us busy...

Wow. I suppose this is another unfortunate case of a "safer" product becoming a crummier product.

just another example of .gov watching out for our well being, or knowing what is best for us if you will.

You do know that the .gov knows whats best?

ive noticed my smokes going out about 2/3 through. im a slower smoker as i like to enjoy them a bit. its been pretty annoying. maybe this is what i got as well? seems like the paper is slower to burn and it smothers them.

In 20 years we'll find out the product they use to make them burn slower causes penis cancer in lab animals or something.

That'll make you wanna quit yesterday!;)

A buddy of mine works at Kimberly-Clark and for about 3 years they produced the paper for cigarettes. The government mandated it. It has a chemical in it that makes it go out if you don't draw on it. All cigarettes will eventually have it.

I'm sure the chemical can't be good for you.
