If you're confident in the accuracy of your rifle and your own capability, I don't see why that combination would be sufficient for deer. That round might be pretty devastating to meat though if you don't make a clean quick kill.

My philosophy: Use 12 gauge slug or .308/.243 for deer. (9MM is for humans!) Of course that could depend on the size of deer in your area. Here in the ridge country of Tennessee they get big enough that even the .243 may not work if it isn't a solid hit, I just don't think 9MM would get it as an effective round.

might kill the deer, but could take a few days or several hours to die or stop moving, don't want to lose your prize. we have had them run from getting hit in the neck with 12 ga slug, that was less than a 1/8 mi though

Just to clarify.......I think you could do it, but if you have other options, there definitely are better choices. If its what you have, and aren't looking to get anything else, out of the carbine you should see .357 type velocities, particularly with that snappy load. A heavier +P load would be preferable though, 124 or 147.

My up close and personal deer rifle (e.g. heavy brush gun) is a .44 magnum Ruger Deerfield which I suppose would be considered a pistol caliber carbine. I don't understand why someone would hunt deer with a 9mm unless they're more interested in bragging rights than clean kills.

I can only assume that this could be done with a perfect head shot or with the deer facing you so the bullet destroys the heart & lungs. Maybe you could start out with cats and dogs and slowly work your way up to deer. For the record I have several cats and dogs and love them all. BUT my country bumpkin friends control the animal population with rimfires. Ask around, maybe someone is having a pest problem and you could help them and find out what happens after you pull the trigger. Happy Hunting!
