today I had a window world apprasier but was only a salemen:rolleyes: come by to look at out house. this guy seemed only like a salesmen, as he only saw one corner and one side from a distance didn't even look inside. my house is a 800 sq ft old section and additional 800sq ft added at some time later before we purchased this year. on the card it says "any size white, double hung $189.00 installed" but he gave me a total of "4235.00:stare: installed for 16 windows. 16 X 1.095 (sales tax) = 3311.28 on my calculator, now my calculation doesn't account for disposal of old windows etc:confused:. he said they have to charge me more due to how they install them as I have aluminum windows currently:screwy:

anyone else have dealings with this company is there something screwy about my house, or is someone wanting alot of commission:tinfoil:

I have not dealt with them but they are probably like Empire. Never take their first offer. They always tend to start out high. Work the numbers your way and give them the option to take it or leave it.

Call two window places, and schedule the appraisals at the same time ;)

lock them in the same room with broken beer bottles, tell them the winner gets the job...see how it goes

You can always go buy some windows from Home Depot or Lowe's, then hire a competent carpenter to come install them for you.

The economy has a lot of tradesman out of work, shouldn't be hard to find a good guy that will give you a fair price.

As a former construction estimator, I beg you to not do this. It's super rude and it won't help you at all.

Try calling Barlow Exteriors in Smyrna, TN and ask for Ed. They put replacement windows in my home last year and I was more than pleased with their work.

I had Window World windows put in last year and I love them. The added charge may be UV coating or some other add on. They have the sales man come out and give you his schpeel and take estimate measurements. Then the installer will come out and take his own measurements. They got 13 windows done in a day and they did a good job. I kept my old windows for the scrap value, which has dropped out. I don't remember a disposal fee if I hadn't kept them. My only problem is, my Dad insisted on my getting silicon caulking on the outside cause it doesn't shrink. Well it did and I'm going to call them out for their warrenty. Which is a good one. Stay away from Champion, high $$$ and high pressure. Lowes and Home Depot do have windows but, unless they are installed by a "Certified Tech", you warrenty is void. They also don't have custom fit windows, just off the rack.

I don't recall if you said you are going with aluminum, vinyl, wood for the new ones, but the man that made mine said to consider vinyl because the aluminum will transfer a lot more of the temperatures you don't want. I thought I was going to move "any day" so I bought the cheap aluminum. I didn't notice much improvement in energy savings. But in my area, they add a "perceived" value to the house.

I will be NOT be going aluminum, aluminum is has a strong thermal conductive nature to it, that is why it is used so often in cooling. the home depot prices are about the same price out the door as window world claims they can install them for. maybe they think I am a you dum kid that feels helpless. anyone who has had them install windows(window world) would you car to tell me how much they charged you(pre-tax if possible), and what type of windows they removed??

sorry typo I said I will be going aluminum when I meant to say I was going away from it

"aluminum is has a strong thermal conductive nature to it"

That is what he was calling a problem.

If you conduct cold air from outside, you bring the cold in to your warm house.

On a somewhat different note, why not install them yourself? As long as you measure at several places on each window, you won't go wrong. All I needed was a ladder, my wife and a cordless drill with a 1/4" nut driver. They went up fast!

We have people do this to us often - it's disrespectful, angering, and frustrating, because it DOES NOT get them a better deal, but then leads to a pressure (from both the sales/contractor side, as well as the customer's side), once it all falls apart.

I cannot stand it when people do this - it's rediculous.

home deopt charge about 180 per window for the relatively equivalent that winwod world is supposed to sell and install for 189 each!

basically window world buys direct from the manufacturer just like home depot or lowes, but in the markup they use some of that money to pay for installation

lowes or home depot window $180~ not including install

window world claims 189 including install.

part of my house is 2 storys high due to exposed basement and a 43H x 34w window wouldn't be very good idea for me to try to balance on a ladder with my 115lb body weight

So you can handle the bottom floor. A helper can do the job with you on top.

You should continue to look for pricing. Don't give up. My total for 10 medium quality storm windows was around $600. But I'm in Memphis with different rates, I'm sure. Imperial Windows has sent windows out of the country, so they could send to you. They make the windows for Home Depot to mark up to you. It's been 8 or so years, but I don't think costs have gone up that much.
