Got the gun, what do I do now?

Woohoo! I finally bought my first handgun yesterday (my long guns wanted a little brother).

Question is, do I need to do anything to it before I start shooting? I mean besides reading the manual and loading it.

Does it need to be stripped and cleaned first? I'm getting itchy but don't want to mess anything up.

BTW it's a S&W Sigma sw9ve.

Cleaning is a good idea. Most of the new handguns I've bought were pretty greased up at the factory.

strip it, clean and re-oil it. Then dry fire it about 500 times to smooth out the trigger on it. That Sigma is a fine enough pistol but the trigger is probably a little stiff.

When I get a new gun, pistol or rifle, I normally take it apart and clean all the grease and oil off that is from the factory. Normally they are shipped with way too much oil for my taste. Field strip it, clean it, re-oil it and you are ready to go. ;)

Whats a manual? ;)

When all else fails, read the directions.

Usually, I just make sure there is some proper lube on the slide rails then go shoot.

Read the manual, at least twice, disaasemble, clean, lube then shoot, repeat as needed!

Since it is your first handgun please pay extra attention to the safety measures in the manual.

I always clean, degrease, and then oil before shooting a gun, even a new gun. The only time I didn't I had a Ruger Mark III FTF and FTE like crazy. Cleaning fixed the problem.

Some guns recommend this i would say.

Glock doesnt recommend the gun to be cleaned at first they recommend shooting some.

I never cleaned ANY of the 12 or so handguns or long guns I've bought brand new prior to firing. Because none of the manuals suggested it.

I did look to see that the barrel was clear in each case, that's about it.

I always look them over, (gun without ammo in it) get familiar with how to relase and insert magazines correctly, I have 2 pistols that the first click the mag isn't fully inserted but on the 2nd the mag is in fully. get familiar with the safety. does the slide stay open when the mag is empty. it often is easier to relases the mag when you push the mag in slightly and then push/pull /etc the mag release.

GET FULLY FAMILIAR WITH HOW IT WORKS PRIOR TO SHOOTING!!!! of course do this unloaded

learn how to load and unload the mags, some are tricky, some are easy and strait forward
