I bought a couple of youth model 20ga a while back for this. sometimes you can run across those pretty cheap. The ones I bought were 870s. Being youth models, they were obviously shorter with an 18.5 inch barrel. I think that is a good way to start.

you can't get the short barrels at Walmart. They only sell hunting length now. I just purchased a Maverick 88 from Academy in Cool Springs with an 18.5 in barrel, but it was a 12 gauge. They had an assortment of options however, I'm sure you could come across a 20 gauge model that would be to your liking. That's assuming there's an Academy in SE Tenn...maybe in Chattanooga? You'll strike out at Walmart unless you want to order a different barrel from somewhere else though.

I have been in and out of a lot of gunshops lately and I haven't seen any 18.5" barreled shotguns except 12 gauges and they were all Mavericks. People aren't selling HD weapons right now so they are pretty scarce. I think your best bet is to buy a used 20 gauge field gun with choke tubes and then purchase the 18.5" barrel. It gives you a nice combination for HD and hunting. I have five 12 gauges but I usually hunt small game with my 20 gauge. It is a good field gun unless you are after big game. I have even hunted turkeys with an aftermarket extended choke. Set up the combo, you'll have enough shotgun for the rest of your life!

I purchased an H&R New England Arms 20 ga. Youth Tactical from Buds Gun Shop On-Line. I hope it will be a good fit for my wife as well. Thanks for the advice.
