Poll: Tennesseans against guns in bars and parks

Most Tennesseans oppose letting the state’s licensed handgun carriers take their weapons into public parks and restaurants, and 80 percent are against guns in bars, according to a new poll by Middle Tennessee State University.

The findings are surprising after a legislative session dominated by the gun lobby, with big majorities enacting new laws this year to allow loaded weapons into public parks and restaurants that serve alcohol.

The poll released Wednesday showed 54 percent of state residents oppose allowing permit holders to carry handguns in parks; 60 percent in restaurants; and 80 percent in bars.

"Opposition to lawfully carrying handguns in bars is especially high, not only among all Tennesseans but also in households that include a handgun owner and even in households that include a handgun carry permit holder," said Dr. Jason Reineke, assistant professor of journalism and associate director of the poll.

The poll found that only about a quarter of those who have a handgun in their household favor allowing handguns to be carried in bars, Reineke said. And the percentage is about the same among those from households in which at least one person has a state handgun carry permit, he said.

That poll is useless without the methodology and target demographics defined. I would expect more from a "University" study.

Well i am all for not having guns in bars... But for establishments that sell food and alcohol, that's a whole different ball of wax.

If I'm going to a bar, it's to get shmammered. Therefore the gun stays in the truck.

If you want to know the truth about polls, read Dick Morris's book "Off with their heads".

He ran the polling for Bill Clinton's first term and tells about how polls can be manipulated to get exactly the results you want. Even the simple how the questions are asked. Tone of voice and emphasis when asking the questions can influence the answers. I don't trust any polls after reading his book.

That this one was an MTSU poll doesn't impress me. All that says to me is it was run by a bunch of liberal professors and idealistic students.

Whatever. If they're not going to publish the demographics or number polled, then I do not consider this "scientific". Therefore, I do not believe a word of any of it. Or am I just overlooking that information?

I may have to change my handle if they keep publishing this kind of garbage.

It's a typical college rag with a liberal agenda. (wow what a shock)!

They probably just went around campus and asked all the "heads", professors, etc. Margin of error +- 100%.

i bet 98% of TN, residents would like a stupid fine also. (you do something stupid you pay a fine)

i think you should have to take an iq test to get a drivers license and vote and the results have to be above 100, if less than that you ride the bus, don't worry about voting if your that dumb trust me the country would be better off if you didn't look what happened last time.........

I'm not a grammar Nazi, and I don't like correcting people, but you have to be careful in your writing skills before you criticize:

I think you should have to take an IQ test to get a driver's license and vote, and the results have to be above 100. If less than that, you ride the bus. Don't worry about voting if you're that dumb.
