Best bang for the buck AR advice needed-please

Hello All,

I am starting my in depth research on the AR. It appears to me there are so many configurations, brands, twist rate, etc. that it will take a long while to decide. I would like to get some advice what direction to go in and what to stay away from. I do want to get the best all around bang for the buck.

So far the Colt 6920 is looking pretty godd to me.................I have a lot more homework to do........

For a stock rifle, the Colt 6920 is the gold standard, I have one and love it. I also have a spare NIB Colt 6920, the factory tape has never been broken, if interested PM me.

I just bought a daniel defense m4 and it is super nice. Havent shot it yet though. Hope to this weekend.

+1.........also there are several companies selling new AR's for under $700 at the moment........ try budsgunshop.com Buy it cheap and stock up on ammo with the rest of the money.

If its a shooter, I don't see going any other way, if its a collector........then go Colt. I have one I built, then bought an M&P later, but thats primarily because I wanted one in 5.45 and options are limited.

Having giving credit to the source I would have to say remember the old saying "You get what you pay for." You have to ask yourself why are you buying an AR? Is it just to have, occasionally plink, "tactical home defense", to be cool or because it is TEOTWAWKI?

Also how many rounds are you going to shoot per week/month? DO you plan on attending any courses such as the MAGPUL that was mentioned in another thread? I would hate to pay good money for quality training then show up and have my primary weapon go down. But for the casual/occasional shooter then maybe it doesn't matter.

To me firearms are a lot like vehicles. They have a purpose and some models are better than others. My 1988 escort can drive me to work but so can my 01 pickup. They both do the same thing does that make one better than the other?

Also I am sure everyone has figured it out by know much like cars/trucks people have definite opinions/loyalty to certain types/makes of firearms. Anyway hope you find a good AR that suits your needs.

Do keep in mind resale value as well. A Colt will hold it's value and likely increase, a frankenstein gun that you throw together will definitely not and probably lose value if you ever need/want to sell.

For a good budget gun, a CMMG M4 is hard to beat.

I had a friend who let me shoot up all his excess ammo through one. About 3500 rounds, and I beat the crap out of that gun. It ran flawlessly, even with all the Wolf I was throwing through it.

The only thing is apparently the warranty is voided if you shoot steel case, mainly because of their MIM extractor. Replace it with a forged extractor and you should never see an issue out of it.

My suggestion: Keep researching, asking around, and looking. There are a lot of things you will want to look at. Flat top or classic handle? Long barrel or short? Build your own, buy online, or from your favorite local gun shop? M16 style or M4?

Good thing is, the buying bubble seems to have burst, just after the manufacturers boosted production, which, I think, will lead to falling prices, just in time for Christmas...

Prices like the one's Matchguy pointed to seem to indicate great deals can be found... but, I do not think you have to rush, time is on your side.

Enjoy the research and finding the best bang for your buck - it will make the purchase even more satisfying.

Thanks guys. I have so much info I don't know wher to start??? I did read in one of the links listed that the CMMG was a good option. I think I will take the advice and not rush into anything..............I think the lower prices are here for a bit.......until SOMEONE breaths a word about gun control!!!!!!
