Wow. Yep takes guts to post that, but hopefully all of us have taken something away from your experience. So kudo's for you posting your story. Complacency can get you killed, events like this, for me anyway, push me away from complacency because this story will be in the back of my mind.

Glad that you could admit a fault, and a very glad that no one was hurt. That's definitely a good lesson learned, and I'm sure that you'll definitely take the utmost consideration for safety next time. I wish that all lessons were learned in this manner, instead of someone being maimed, killed, etc... Even though you lost a comforter, and some pride, you've still done well!

This is what happens when you try to de cock a loaded 1911 after you clean it. Had a little oil on the hammer. It's totally my fault for doing it. I just thank the Lord that my habbit of always pointing my gun at the ground(floor) paid off. I know, keep it cocked and locked...

My wife about dropped a load , as did I.... Man I'm an idiot!!!

Went through the bed and the floor. I haven't went under the house to try to find the slug. It was a HJP STX...

When I'm loading or unloading my handguns in the house I always point it at my bed and floor so if it does discharge it will do exactly what it did to you so kudo's for doing that. All you lost was a comforter, some temporary hearing and maybe a little dignity but no one was hurt or killed.

And to the OP, I'm not pickin' on ya', but for the life of me, I'll never, EVER understand why anyone would EVER manually drop the hammer on a loaded weapon--be it 1911 or wheel gun. My fiancée's stepfather shot himself through the foot several years ago in exactly the same manner (oil on the hammer).

I feel exactly same way.

Last SA/DA one I handled loaded was Beretta 92.

I KNOW it's doing as designed, but watching that hammer smack down on a chambered round is, even outdoors, an uncomfortable feeling, and indoors would be indeed unnerving to me.

But heck, I've never felt totally comfy chambering that first one indoors even on a striker fired semi. There's always that minuscule chance that something breaks and that firing pin is exposed for a slam fire.

Reminds me of a mistake I made when I first started carrying, I had two handguns side by side one load,one not:tinfoil:

decided to dry fire the empty one! long story short, I shot a hole through my wood floor, it scared me so bad I wanted to sell the guns, when I finally calmed down, I would not carry a loaded (in the chamber) weapon again until I retrained my self in a new mind set on safety, it took a few months, but I am totally changed in my mine set in handling and carrying guns, this stupid accident gave me the drive to change gun handling forever...

I have seen a few accident victims, my brothers roof, my uncles truck, my dad's roof( done by my uncle) my other uncles roof( done by his son), I am proud to say the only holes in my house have been done by the termites. NO I am not knocking on wood it might fall down. ( just kidding:D) I guess it goes back to B-ball days NO blood no foul.
