Below I am listing what I believe to be a good starter set up for my home. I dont want to have hundreds of guns just laying around and never getting shot (yeah right). But really, will this be the all around good set-up? I also want to limit calibers.

Marlin 60 .22 (teach son on, hunt, defend palace, and whatever else comes along for this tank)

Remington 500 .12g (24 inch barrell interchangable chokes) (home defense and hunting)

Walther P .22 (bug out gun)

Savage .270 w/scope (defend the palace and hunting)

Glock 23 .40 s&w (nightstand and CC)

I would add to that a politically incorrect rifle. Pistol grip, semi-auto, detachable magazine, etc. AK, AR, FAL, something like that, depending on how much you can spend and how heavy or light you want it to be. Maybe ditch the Walther; the Glock will serve the same purpose.

You are correct and I was about to add that:

I was going to take away the .270 and add an, AR or the likes. The walther I thought could serve a hunting and defense purpose as a bug out being a .22 with light ammo. The glock being harder to hunt for a squirel with

Now this just me, but i would,

1: get a ruger 10/22 instead of the marlin

2: get a Remington 870 12 Ga (Remington does not make a 500, Mossberg does)

3: get a Ruger MK series, much tougher than the Walther (plus you can use it as blunt object)

4: get an AR put a scope on it or whatever, would go for 6.5 or 6.8 so you can use it for hunting as well.

5: Glock is fine i gues

Sounds like a decent "start" so far. I too have a Marlin 60 .22 that I got in a trade a while back. It makes a pretty good backup squirrel gun should something ever happen that I can't use my Ruger 10/22. I would if I were you pick up a 10/22 at some point though for hunting the tree rats and just general plinking here and there. Personally I've been thinking of picking up a Walther P22 for handgun plinking, but other than that that would really be the only use I would have for it. The Glock 23 should be good for your CC needs, but I also like to have a full size .45 on the nightstand. Mine personally is an XD, but I'd also like to go over to the 1911 side of things eventually. As for the shotgun, the Mossberg 500 will be good enough for hunting, but you should look into getting a Remington 870 with a much shorter barrel for HD, and then you may get another longer version for hunting. The .270 will be good for deer hunting, but I would also pick up an AR-15 for varmit hunting and HD.

There are many others to consider as well, AK's, SKS's, and also I like my cheap little Hi-Point 9mm Carbine for a small plinking/HD rifle. Basically look at the caliber and type of gun you are wanting, and what purpose it serves for you. Once you get one caliber/type of gun, for each purpose....then buy a second in the same class to have as a back up for the first one. Once you have that start hoarding ammo for each. ;)

You did say you were wanting to build an arsenal..:D

Having had my cousin drop by to show me his toys yesterday, I would concentrate on quality above all else.

He bought a standard Beretta .40 early this year. Fine.

Two weeks ago, bought a Kimber Ultra II. Not fine. The "stainless" barrel is oxidizing/rusting at the breech already and it seems to be a pain to strip. He's already talking about shelling out for extended release and rearward slide release. Should have bought it right to start with. Maybe 1911s have a few more steps to disassemble than I'm familiar with.

Yesterday, shows me a Mossberg "camper" with that irritating slide release button. It just screams "beginner's gun." Then shows me a Mossberg .308 "Sniper" rifle with a very loosy-goosy bolt that I thought was going to fall out in my hands. But he did add an impressive scope and a bi-pod attachment. We'll shoot it for the first time this weekend.

I guess we all start somewhere, and sometimes it's with something cheap. With me it was the Kel-tec .40 with beltclips attached on both sides. I couldn't feed the mag fully without thinking I was going to bust out the butt plate or over fill it to the point of creating jams. I always had to leave out one round in the mag.

Glock 19 or 23. Some people tend to believe 9mm will be easier to find when SHTF.

AR-15

Ruger 10/22

Remington 870

Ruker Mk III for a .22 pistol, more for practice than actual defense use.

I disagree. It's much harder to find now, so it isn't going to get any easier unless they up production between now and said SHTF day.

9mm is much more common in military usage than .40. I don't intend to rely on the military for my ammo. Some people theorize that they might. That said, get both!

Thanks. I forgot to mention my FEG 9mm that I will keep and definately use in a needed situation. I just like the .40 better for the "hit 'em in the chest and watch them cut a backwards flip out the door movie style" round. :)

I agree. My G23 is strapped to my hip right now!

Production of 9mm ammo has been constant. The reason it's hard to find is because everyone and their brother is hoarding it. 9mm ammo will be everywhere but stores and it'll be near every powder blue helmet or uniform with a red star depending on the type of SHTF we're talking about :D
