Bow hunting equipment

i am completely new to archery and was wanting to ask a few questions about equipment and such. i have shot a 45lb recurve bow in the past but couldnt get a consistant enough release and stopped shooting it as it was an older bow that my grandfather gave to me and it is now put away.

i will not be going this year as i want the experience to make sure im good enough at it, but id like to try deer hunting with a bow next season.

ive been looking at a PSE Stinger combo from cabelas. is this a decent bow?

what type of arows are most people using, carbon fiber, wood, aluminum shafts? fixed or mechanical broadheads?

how does the weight of a broadhead factor into the trajectory of the bow and terminal ballistics? do you use heavier or lighter?

anything else i should look at or into? maybe try to find an archery shop to determine proper draw length?

Def. find an archery shop that knows what they are doing. Don't trust the big chains like BPS or Gander Mountain. Too many people there swear up and down that they know what they are doing and you end up just getting the run around.

cool. i will check them out.

WD - you have a PM in route as well.

is it possible to get completely set up to go deer hunting for 500 or less? i was thinking about buying a glock for other purposes but can easily shift that money elsewhere if i wanted to.

I agree with everyone else on finding a shop locally. No matter what kinda bow you buy, you're going to want to get it set up for you as the shooter. Pick out the type of release you like, as well as the type of peep sight you like, that way everything can be setup or at least measured for while you're there. Things like your arrows will also have to be cut down to the length you need. With all that in mind I don't see how the big chains ever sell any bows out of their catalogs unless the person buying has already been shooting and knows their draw length and arrow length.

After that get you a good target to shoot at, and practice all you can. When I was bow hunting all the time we would start shooting in the middle of the summer to practice up for deer season. To me the target shooting was just as much fun as the hunting.

thats why i figured id get started soon and have plenty of practice before next season. ill probably go get measured and such and try a few different draw weights but then wait until bow season is over to catch a deal.

Once you find out what your drawlength is shoot me a PM. I have a Bowtech Tribute (apex of the top of the line in 06). It is ready to hunt and if you have the same drawlength I can hook up with a dozen arrows. If you are not the right drawlength I can still make a deal on the bow but you well need to take it to a Bowtech dealer and he can install the correct cams for your drawlength.

That is a sweet bow!

I'm pretty sure CK's is a BowTech dealer. Give them a call, I'm sure Randy could work you up something on some cams.
