Between my Dad, my brother, and I we have over 50k of .22, 9mm, 5.56, .308, .30-06, 8mm, 7.62x39, 7.62x54R, and .50 BMG. And we are still buying.

I have tried to keep 1,000 rounds per gun but its fallen back lately. But thats what I like to keep for personal usage. 10,000 rounds per caliber should be adequate for "future preparations" along with as much reloading supplies as you can get.

of course this is pending your funds obviously.

If the funds are available, buy, buy, buy...... Brick-n-mortar and Web when it's the right price. I think I'm still behind some of you guys, though!!!

I use to think a box or two of each caliber was plenty, up until I bought my first AR and started doing alot more target shooting. Heck, one box wont even fill up a 30 round AR mag, and if you have more than one then you're definately gonna be short. Even doing some target shooting with a .22lr you will eat though 200+ rounds before you know it and end up looking around trying to find a deal on some again. Nowadays my personal comfort level is know I have at least 500 to 1000 rounds of each caliber. Maybe a little bit less for shotguns, but with them you also have to throw in a variety of different shells.

Just take a look at all the people you live close to, and know that any given morning you may wake up to find out they are all zombies, and think of how many you'll have to shoot in the head before you can get to a store that has more ammo.

Not sure about 'average', but I keep:

500-1000rd .45acp Target ammo

500rd .45acp JHP

1000-2000rd 9mm Target ammo

500rd 9mm JHP

1000-2000rd .223rem Milsurp

50-100rd 12ga Target shells

250rd 12ga 3" 000-Buck

100-200rd .38spl Target ammo

~50rd .357mag JHP

I currently have more JHP than FMJ in 9 & 45. Deep breaths. I would say the average gun owner has one box per caliber. The average shooter one ammo can full total. I have 3 ammo cans full. I try to buy a little every payday. I wouldn't recommend putting yourself in the hole so you can buy cases of ammo. But you might want to brown bag your lunch until you can use your 50 Cal ammo cans for squats.
