Sig Pro 2022 or M&P?

I am looking at two handguns for my next buy. I am considering a Sig Pro 2022 in 9mm and a S&W M&P 9mm.

The Sig is running $440 with night sights new and the M&P I want (full size with safety) is running $550.

The factors I am considering are this:

I have small hands - Grip Size (some guns have a slide release that is way too far forward to where I have to tilt gun sideways) (for instance a HK usp 45, I have to tilt sideways) I see the Sig Pro has a slide release that is very far back and looks managable.

Both have interchangable grips (Sig has 2, M&P has 3) Just not sure how small each gets.

Reliability

Fit and Finish

Shootability (aim speed, etc; )

Any opinions?

I used to own a Sig SP2022.

Like Magic said, they are underrated guns. Mine was definetley a solid shooter (dare I say a "tack driver"), and at $440 w/ night sights is an absolute bargain for a 9mm pistol from any manufacturer, much less from Sig.

That said, the grip is kinda big. Not impossibly big, and you CAN buy different sized grips for it (they are interchangeable), but I believe the 2 sets it ships with are the medium sized ones. One is stippled, the other has rubber grippy panels on it. The plastic stippled one is slightly smaller.

I think the SP2022 would be well suited for a OWB duty gun, but it's definitely not adequately suitable for IWB CC.

You'll pay more for the S&W, but it would DEFINITELY make a more suitable carry piece.

What do you want out of this thing? Are you biased to striker fired or hammer fired?

If you just want a decently priced quality 9mm at a bargain price, I'd go w/ the Sig. If you're looking for a piece to fill more roles than just range duty and night stand duty, I'd go with the S&W.

the deal breaker on the 2022 for me was not the grip, but the trigger guard. for some reason, it bows down right as it comes into the grip. It pushed very uncomfortable into my middle finger. Although the 2022 is not as bad about this as the classic sig pistols, the slide release is in a bad spot for thumbs forward shooters. It causes the slide not to lock back on the last round.

My vote would be for the M&P9, just from what I've heard from others. I'm as big a SIG honk as anyone, but just didn't like the 2022. Not a bad gun, but just doesn't do anything for me.

I really like the way the M&P feels, ergonomics etc.

Just ordered my second Sig 2022 from Bud's. $439 delivered? Awesome deal on a great shooter. One thing I should mention, though, is that the gun does not come with two grips--just one.

Really? When I bought mine it came with two, like this shown here:

I had a SigPro w/o the rail several years ago. I just never could get used to the fit at all. I really wanted to like it, but it never happened.

I also had a M&P 45 for a short time. I did not have any problems whatsoever with it. I really liked it, but found something else I liked more.

If the SigPro fits you, I would buy it no question. The M&P is also a quality weapon. They did have a few quirks at the beginning, but they have been worked out by now I would think.

Something else to consider is a CPO Sig P226 or P229 for the same money as the M&P. Heck, I even know where there is a CPO Stainless P220 for the same price (Maybe less out the door).

Thanks for all the info. Im not opposed to either striker or hammer fired. Not looking for a CC piece, just a good all around home/range gun.

this may or may not be a consideration but I wouldn't worry about the slide release. Some pistols don't have them at all. If you get in the habit of racking the slide instead, you will be good to go if having to deal with an unfamiliar pistol.

I'm a bit biased towards sig but I have to friends with 2022's that absolutely love them.

I am a big fan of the Sig. I was looking at one before I got my 229. Great gun for the money. It shoots as well as the higher priced sigs, but I liked the grip on the 229 better.

I am not a big fan of the M&P. If I were in the market for a polymer frame gun I would get another Glock.

I have an M&P Pro 9 that is an awesome gun. The small backstrap gets SMALL, even for my "little girl" hands. You'd be amazed at how small even the medium backstrap is. I shoot this gun as well as my XD 9 Tac, which is pretty good considering I have over 5000 rounds through my XD and only about 400 through the M&P. If mags weren't so expensive, I'd compete with my M&P instead of the XD.

I can't compare it to the 2022, because I've never shot one, but the M&P is far more accurate than I am, VERY reliable, and extremely comfortable to shoot.

Having handled both, the M&P fit me much better. I also liked the trigger better on the M&P. Both good guns.

Thank you kindly. Since you have handled both, I think I have about made up my mind between your opinion and others that the M&P would be a better fit for me. Thus resulting in a more accurate and easier to shoot weapon. Thanks
