Hey guys -

I've been looking at the following handguns. I'm interested in a sub-compact <$600 (pref. <$500). All in 9mm.

What do you think of the following:

CZ-USA 2075 RAMI

Beretta PX4 SubCompact

Glock 26

Springfield XD 9mm Sub-Compact

Walther PPS

Kahr PM9

I'm a gun novice, so I would like some suggestions on the above (or any others). I'm looking for something that I can conceal easy and is reliable.

BIG fan of my XD-9 SubCompact :squint: Great ergonomics (for me), accurate, dead nuts reliable..........I like it.

Ditto.

All the double stackers are gonna be about the same thickness - meaning, chunky. I had narrowed it down to G26 or XD9 SC. There isn't 1/8" diff in any dimension and same thickness...

XD gives you 13+1 now in the short mag, though, plus the grip safety was a big plus in my consideration. Others see it as a detriment.

You get into single stack guns like the even smaller PM9, and you're in really an even different league. It's even more concealable. But now you're only carrying 6+1. And though my PM9 has been 99.9% reliable, even through the recommended 200 round break in, it still HAS failed, unlike my XD.

I like my S&W M&P 9 compact. It has 12 + 1 capacity. Has 3 changeable backstraps so you can adjust the fit. You can reverse the magazine release button and with slide releases on both sides it is left hand friendly. The frame and slide edges seem smoother (rounder), not as blocky, and not as top heavy as some others. The front is tapered some to ease holstering. You do not have to pull the trigger to disassemble. I have fired several hundred rounds of about 6 different types of ammo and not had a single problem. I have not had a single problem with the full size M&P 9 either with more than 500 rounds. Made in the USA.

I've handled/looked at all but the Walther...my picks would be:

#1= XD sub-compact

#2= CZ Rami

since you mentioned you're a new shooter; the XD would be just a tad easier to operate... (not that the Rami is complex, but a DA/SA can just take a bit more getting used too....). the XD also points a little better, at least for me...

you're in the Nashville area...so if I were you, I'd head out to Guns & Leather, and take a look at them. (they had both in stock the last time I was in there...plus they're great folks to deal with  well worth the drive!!)

good luck, and let us know what you end up with.

I vote for the xd9. All your choices are fine weapons, but the xd is unbelievably accurate for a compact and very easy to shoot even with the newest hot 9mm loads.

the only 2 of these i have shot are the g26 and the xd9sc but i would choose the xd over the glock. to me it is a much better fit and more accurate. the xd9sc is my wife's carry gun.

So I had the hardest time myself choosing between the Glock 26 and XD9SubCompact. Both are very similar and the ones I shot seemed to be pretty sweet. What swayed me (i ended up going up to the 40 cal. instead of the 9mm but the same statements apply to the 9mm's) was that the XD came with a regular magazine and a higher capacity mag, a holster, and a speedloader. The glock didnt quite have all that. Also the XD has a small metal pin on the rear that lets you know if it's cocked or not AND in addition it has a tab on the top of the gun that lets you know wether or not a round is in the chamber (the tab pops up). So I liked that and my wife did too. She could immedialty pick up the gun and know whether it was cocked and one loaded in chamber.

Just my two cents.

Either would be excellent.

Have fun shopping!

So - no votes for the Beretta? I do like the sexy Italian styling... but it looks like the Crotian-built Springfield XD 9mm subcompact is one I may look at. Though, I am leery of putting my life in the hands of Balkan engineering. :D

I'll see if Academy Sports has any models in stock which I can play with.

not to tick off any beretta folks, but...I used to have one of these:

it's a Beretta 9000s...pretty sleek, but that's about the best thing it had to offer. both it & the PX4 are all looks IMO. just can't stack up to some of the other guns on your list....

as far as that balkan engineering goes...broken XD's are pretty rare ;)

Walther, esp. for carry. Of course I'm a Walther p99 owner. It's really what you feel most comfy with. But the Walther PPS got good reviews and still packs the punch.

Well I feel out numbered here but I'm just gonna say it...

PPS.

Either way, shoot as many as possible beforehand. And the whole time you're shooting those don't ignore that little voice inside of you telling you that the PPS is the coolest.

I've had mine for 6 months-ish and have never looked back.
