scary situation

I got a text message from my mom early this morning telling me that her house had been broken into. Come to find out that she had left for work about 2 minutes before, my stepdad had left earlier, and my 16 year old sister was home alone waiting on a friend to pick her up for school. My sister called my mom and said "someone is banging on the front door should I call 911". Then the phone went dead. Needless to say my mom was frantic and immediately turned around to head back home. As she was on her way back she was trying to call my sister back with no answer. When she arrived and went inside my sister had locked herself in the upstairs bathroom and was talking to 911. They both left the house and waited for the cops. They had to call the cops again before they even showed up.

Whoever the son of a bitch was kicked in the back door and stole nothing but a jewelry box, worth almost nothing, then ran out the front. They could tell this because jewelry had been dropped around the front door area. Now there was probably $15K-$20K worth of guns in an upstairs bedroom and several mid range paintings on the walls in the living area which the crook walked right past. All we can figure is he heard my sister upstairs and got out of dodge. Thank GOD he chose the option instead of the alternative.

Now they live in a pretty nice neighborhood with houses that are on 1/8th acre lots so there was the potential of the crook being spotted by any of a number of people. No one saw a thing, though one neighbor did hear the banging.

The worst part for me is that they're in Texas and I feel like I can't do anything to help. I guess the point of me telling y'all this is to let every know that it can happen to anyone at anytime so be prepared.

I'm sure there are many errors in my spelling and grammer, I apologize.

We're going to be seeing more of this in this economy, in my opinion. My girfriend's parents live on the lake in a subdivision way out in BFE. Its all large homes. Two houses have been robbed in the past three weeks. It can happen anywhere. I think it will get worse. I'm glad that your family is physically okay.

Everyone take note of this!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Thank goodness it didn't turn out worse than it did. It should remind us all that our personal safety is up to US. No government thug with a badge is going to take care of you. That is a lie perpetuated by politicians to gain more power.

Suntzu is right, there have been four armed robberys of fast food establishments in Knoxvile in less than 24 hous. The economey is down, people are out of work and have to feed either their families or their drug habits. I feel bad for the people struggling to feed their families and consider mysely lucky not to have joined their ranks thus far, but they should be able to get assistance. The rest are predators looking for someone weaker than themselves to prey upon and should be delt with as such. I am glad your family came out of this situation as well as they did

Tell them to keep at least one of those guns handy so the next time they lock themselves in the bathroom they can blast the turd if he decides to come in after them.

Sounds like a good reason to put in a little more range time

unfortunately my sister, the only one home at the time, has never even handled a firearm. this is her choice, maybe she will change her mind now. if my stepdad was home at the time i have a feeling they would have to replace the carpet.

i am going to make sure that my mom and sister are equipped with mace in the near future.

I forgot to say how glad I am they are all OK.

Sounds like you have a reason to go the range next time you're visiting, or vice versa.

Glad everything is ok, something similar happened to me and my wife (and 3 year little boy) several months ago. Loud banging on the door and fiddling with the door handle, was late at night. Cops showed up very quick, but I was still glad I had protection, b/c in most cases they won't get there in time.

Please, the next time you report something like this do not tell every thief what your parents own!!!!!!! Now you should help them buy a safe.

Another thing. That loud banging on the door is how they check if somebody is home. If you hear somebody banging extra loud, get your gun immediately. Then you can decide if you want to answer, peek outside, etc.

I'm not afraid of them, I've simply found them pretty much useless. It seems that others are finding out what I've known for years. It actually isn't the police's job to protect you, no matter what is painted on their car doors, it is YOUR job.
