Pets with Cherry Eye

Anyone had this problem with their dogs?

We woke this morning to find that Grizwald, our Basset puppy (15 weeks old) has "Cheery Eye" in both eyes.

Other than some discharge draining from the worst of the two eyes, he doesn't appear to be all that bothered by it. Me, on the other hand, I think I could almost cry for him. He has the typical droopy eyes common with the breed, but this makes him look extra pitiful.

After doing a little research on the Internet, I found that some folks were able to "massage" the protruding glands back into place. I tried this and was successful a couple of times, but the glands pop right back out a short time later.

I read a few options, but it seems that surgery is the likely option for the long-term.

I had a bulldog with this condition. The surgery didn't seem too hard on him and it cleared it right up. Though, as I recall, it was his eyelashes that caused the problem not glands so your case is probably different.

Now you made me think of my dead dog! Man, I loved that dog.

My advice: start putting dead in front of the dogs name. Like "come here dead jimmy" that way when the dog dies you'll be prepared.

:P

Do you recall the cost of the surgery? Was the surgery done on one or both eyes?

Sadly Patton cost a lot. It was around the same time he ripped a tendon and went three paws. I think the dog knee surgery was four hundred and the eye surgery was about two hundred. I couldn't say that the double hundy didn't include his yearly checkup and shots.

I really like my dogs so I don't deny them much. Perhaps I overpaid but I don't regret it.

I had it done to my bulldog and I think it was around 200-250. They said it really doesnt bother the dog to have it there. But it looked like it hurt him so I had them to fix it.

My former vet hit his eye while doing the surgery so his eye was scratched after the surgery. He hated the lamp shade he had to wear after the surgery.

Heres my baby.

See how his left eye is red and the right is black. Surgery was on the left.

Yea, he doesn't seem to be too bothered by it. Well, that's until he wakes up and the discharge has "glued" his eye shut.

They are very good dogs but the breed is so flawed they are always needing to go to the vet.

There's a veterinary opthamologist out of Nolensville who see's patients at the Rivergate pet emergency center. He's supposed to be one of the best in the country. My schnauzer, who passed from Cushing's Disease, had gone blind from it. Unfortunately, his vision couldn't be fixed.

Let us know how everything goes TDR. Poor little guy, I hate that for him.

Well, surgery looks to be the only option.

They prescribed steroid/antibiotic eye drops to administer for the next week to ten days. This should decrese the inflammation and have him more prepared for surgery.

For those who don't already know, rescuing an animal can become very costly.

Good luck with everything.

We rescued a puppy that was lost on the highway. Never could find the owners. Poor little guy had ticks all over him. We kept him for a month, he was scarred of everything at first, and when he finally was able to acclimate himself back to normal, we gave him to a friend with a large farm. He's been living it up ever since.
