Has anyone picked up the new Beatles collection that has been remastered yet? I've listened through it in stereo and mono, I have to say that I enjoy the mono more...but there is no Yellow Submarine or Let It Be in mono. =(

The real mixes were the mono ones. They spent very little time or effort on the stereo ones. Because of the limited number of tracks they had to deal with and all the bouncing and combining they had to do, the stereo mixes pretty much suck anyway compared to what we're used to now. Most of their stuff was recorded four-track.

For a really interesting read on the making of their records, check out Geoff Emerick's book, Here, There and Everywhere.

He replaced Norman Smith as their engineer starting with Revolver, when he was just 18. Fascinating reading.

It's an even better book if you spent a good portion of your professional life in that environment, where the techniques described in the book were still the norm.

I'd imagine the recording studio environment today is very different.

Different and yet the same....I also recommend highly "The Daily Adventures of Mixerman" book. It's an engineer's memoir of recording a real band for a major (unnamed label) that had me in tears of laughter, and is a good explanation of the reasons why I chose not to pursue it as a profession for myself lol.
