Frustrated!!!!!

Got back from Indy last Sunday to my internet being down. No biggie but on the phone with them for two hours to tell me they will have to send a tech out. Thought it was the modem but ended up being a port on there end. I did get a new DSL modem out of it but am having a time configuring it with my router.

I have a Linksys WRT54G Router and AT&T's Motorola 2210 modem and for the life of me can't get them to work together.

I have tried this:

I just set up my Linksys WRT54G router to connect to ATT/Yahoo DSL with help from this forum.

1) Keep the ATT modem configured as default (mine is Motorola 2210 and its default is to run PPOE on the modem itself). This is the way the Windows DSL account installation utiliity leaves it.

2) Set the router to "Automatic Configuration - DHCP"

3) Set the "Local IP Address" to anything but 192.168.1.*. You can use 192.168.2.1 and it works fine.

4) Save your router configuration changes.

5) Turn off modem, router and PC (unless you know your way around the ipconfig /release command.

6) Restart the modem and wait for the green light to go solid.

7) Restart the router and wait for it to come up.

8) Restart your PC. You should be good to go .

When I set my router to 192.168.2.1 it want let you back into after wards. I had a reset it and start over.

Does any of the network guru's here have any insight on this other than buy a new Router?

Thanks,

Are you an NCTC customer? If so, are you using the modem they supply?

I've had very similar problems lately with DSL disconnecting itself. They replaced my modem once, and it refused to work with my router for no apparent reason. They replaced that modem with a second one just like it, and the second modem works fine with the router.

Might try that?

Thanks,

I had issues with a Linksys 54G, then (because it was free thru a program), went with the all in one from ATT (originally had Bellsouth).

No problems since.

I am not good enough (as a regular, not IT guy) to diagnose without "being there".

What does the ATT helpdesk tell you? They should be able to walk you thru on the phone and confirm your setup routine - directions are sometimes not complete (I found out more than once with IT issues) but a good helpdesk guy/gal can get you going.

I would not set your own IP. I would leave everything auto.

I think he was talking about the Default Gateway in #3.

For the record Linksys routers suck donkey balls. I had trouble with 2 linksys routers and decided my money was better spent on a DLink DGL-4300. My DLink hasn't failed me yet, knock on wood!

I'm running of the DSL right now straight off the modem. Just can't get the router to work inline with it. I haven't called ATT helpdesk on it. They were no help last time. Unless you use there router they can't/wont help. It has worked great for what I need for years and don't want to buy another.

Really want to buy a Sig P220 Combat and counting my pennies to do it but this isn't helping.

That's what sucks about AT&T, if you hook up a router/modem that they didn't issue, they won't help. I've been there many times, and am thinking about just switching to cable, but want to check out U-Verse when it finally gets to my neighborhood.

UVerse is the shizzle. I can't wait til they offer it out in my neighborhood. Won't be for a while though. And for the record, I don't think you're gonna get much love from Comcast on supporting equipment they didn't issue either. At least that was my experience.

Here's whatcha need to do. First, reset your router back to factory defaults. Don't change anything. Turn off your DSL modem and hook the router into the port where your computer was. Make sure you are plugging into the WAN port on the router. Turn on DSL modem. Wait til you get the "Internet" light. Turn on router. Wait till it comes up and gives all appropriate lights. Hook up computer, check to see if you are getting an IP address from the router. (Go to Start, select Run, type "cmd" and hit enter. At the command prompt, type "ipconfig /all") If you have an IP address that begins with 192.168. then you're probably good to go. If not, and you have an IP address that starts with 169. then you are not getting an IP address from the router. Troubleshoot from there. Send me a PM if you need to. Maybe we can get on the phone and figure this out if necessary.

Yeah, it looks awesome. I worked for AT&T for the past 6 years (left in December), and got to see a demo a couple years ago. If it works as good as the demo, then it will be sweet.
