I can't thank you enough for posting that. My Dad was a rifleman, 95th Infantry division, European theatre 1944-45 and wrote a book about his experiences, including training with the M1 and the carbine. He saw those films. I only wish he were around to watch them again with me.

It was self-published and consists mostly of letters he wrote to my Mom from basic through the end of the war. He was a good writer. He didn't learn that she'd saved them until 1994 and spent the next year or so editing them and writing some additional material. Not a lot of blood and guts, a little too much mush, but some good insight into the daily life of a GI and the politics of the time. Metz was his outfit's big battle...the 95th were called "the Iron Men of Metz." The Colonel of his Regiment, the 377th, was a big music fan....thought it was good for morale to have a regimental dance/show band. Dad played sax in that band. The night before they were to go into combat the Col. pulled all the band members out of their rifle squads and made them his "headquarters guard." Out of Dad's 12 man squad 5 were killed, 6 wounded. He carried a strong survivor's guilt the rest of his life, and devoted his life to public service as a congressman and later a Federal judge (those things used to be considered honorable callings). He wasn't a gun enthusiast and from his account of the hours and days they spend unpacking 1917 Enfields from cosmoline while in basic I can kind of understand why.

Thanks Climber. He was a good guy who loved his country enough to try to make it better. Passed away 2 years ago at 84.

THough he accomplished a lot in his life, all he wanted on his headstone under his name was PFC, 95th Infantry Division. They don't call 'em "greatest generation" for nothin.
