I registered here a month or so ago but I think this is my first post. I had something almost happen today that I need an opinin on. We to Smyrna airport entering on the East side of airport, the "old" side. I notice up ahead there are two ?Smyrna? officers shooting radar in my direction. I have my pistola in the center hump in my truck. I think, "I am going to get a speeding ticket, and am I allowed to have my HG on the airport? I did not get a ticket, not even pulled over, lucky day. Conducted my business then left. Got to thinking about it later and wondered if there was a law against carrying in the parking lot of the airport. I did not see any postings, I did find a place in the TCA where it said no carrying on property owned by a municipal government. It also said there that picking up or dropping off passengers would be considered a defense to being charged with carrying on municipal property. Please educate me as to what I am missing here. Thank you for your time,

They would have to properly post the parking lot to prevent carry of firearms there. Even the unsecured area of the Nashville Int'l airport wasn't properly posted last time I was there. You would have been fine, as long as you have a permit.

Are airports considered government buildings? You can't carry into the terminals but unless it's posted I was under the impression airports where fine too.

I've carried into an airport before to pick someone up, but of course never attempted to carry beyond the metal detectors. I'd never leave mine locked in the car at Nashville International seeing how cars do get broken into from time to time.

Since you can check your firearm when traveling then carrying in the parking lot should not be a problem. The biggest problem is like you said Tungsten, in Nashville cars get broken into on a regular basis.

Just because it is called a municipal airport, does not necessarily mean it is owned by the city...probably is but not necessarily.

Unless I'm missing something in TN code, it doesn't even matter that property is owned by the city. This is the only section I found that mentions city property specifically:

39-17-1311. Carrying weapons on public parks, playgrounds, civic centers and other public recreational buildings and grounds.

I wouldn't consider an airport a recreational destination. :)

I happen to know someone who works for that city :koolaid:.

You were fine carrying at the airport.

if you are checking it, it must be unloaded and the ammo must be completley seperate and locked in a container to which only you gave the key. if you choose a metal container, they can be together but not loaded, and still locked...(at least that is what I read on the TSA site)

not sure about the dropping people off thing...I would imagine you are ok unless you are handeling it (similar to the school laws?)
