Bottom line: it doesn't really matter, unless you have enemies that might try some dirty tricks on you. I can imagine what could be done with such information to cause a person a lot of inconvenience.

What specifically do you have in mind, other than reporting it stolen? That kind of thing can happen with most anything, like a vehicle, for instance.

I just wondered if there was something I was missing or not.

I think SNs are obscured due to a basic desire for privacy+anti-Big Brother thing. Heck, a lower unit is a lower unit as long as the picture is clear and helpful to viewers. On another (pistol) forum today, I saw that one guy posted his Montana CCW license, obscured his SSAN on it, but left his name and DOB on it for all to see. What am I missing here?
