Shipping a handgun

I made my first internet trade the other day, but I'm still trying to work out the mechanics of the trade itself.

So it is illegal to ship the handgun via USPS, correct? Unless I get a FFL to do it for me? Anyone know of a FFL that will do it without charging an arm and a leg?

I also heard that UPS and FedEx will ship it if I ship it overnight. But then I heard that FedEx has started allowing handgun shipments through 2-day shipping as well. Anyone know if there is any truth to that?

And of course, please understand that this pistol is being shipped to his FFL and not to him directly.

Thanks in advance.

Fedex is a no go unless it's to a FFL, period. Doesn't matter what their written policies are, this is what they will tell you.....No. UPS is hit or miss with who you get at the counter. Either way, if it is out of state it has to go to a FFL. That is BATF regulation. It gets really confusing on technicalities, but according to the BATF you can ship to an individual in state without an FFL. Out of state has to go FFL. The shippers have their own policies, which is why I box it up follow BATF guidelines and ignore the shippers policies. Downside is no insurance.

yea i would definitely have a signature required by the 21yr old ADULT addressed. and as long as there is no ammunition it is the same as machined parts i do believe. i may be wrong on that but im pretty sure as long as it meets eligibility to own a gun standards, and ffl requirements then its good

Im just looking for the cheapest way to ship a handgun legally. The FFLs I called about shipping were asking an enormous amount to do so. Almost a wash to do overnight or get somebody to ship usps for me. But 2nd day air would be the cheapest if allowed. I'll call fedex tomorrow.

ATF Online - Firearms FAQs

(B7) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U.S. Postal Service?[Back]

A nonlicensee may not transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another State. A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. The Postal Service recommends that long guns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun.

(B8) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier? [Back]

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.
