When you grade a handgun

When you grade a gun what standard do you go by?

I see a lot of 90-95% and so on. And it made me wonder in the GUN world is there a standard if so who uses it or do we just make a guess.

When one states a percent is it only the finish being referred to? Or are they including the mechanics and function of the gun as well?

I guess we base 100% as being New from the factory. But I have seen new guns that are far from 100%. Such as: NIB

I collect coins and there is a set way to grade a coin and even then it is subjective within a point or two.

I hope some long time gun guys chime in to enlighten me on this.

It all depends on who is grading them , some are more restrict thatn other. What I look for is how much was the gun used, was it abused or was it taken care of, are there any dings and scratches, has the blue worn off. holstered guns got it tough, even though they may not be shot much there finish gets damaged a lot and that affects their value as well.

It’s just a number pulled out of the air.

It really doesn’t matter as long as you clearly convey the condition to the buyer; no surprises.

If it’s 98%; you need to describe what’s up with the 2%.

NIB implies that you can register with the manufacture and have a full warranty. If that is not the case; it is not NIB. Warranties have a value.
