Well as it gets to that time when we start venturing back out into the great outdoors, I was wondering what you guys use as bug repellant. Particularly ticks! I have a therma cell and it works great for mosquitoes but does nothing for ticks. Interested on what you use while deer hunting as not to spoke game with the odors?

I just try to hunt with you, because you seem to attract them like flies to honey. I'm typically not bothered much by them when you or Daddy Bob are around.

Ever heard of peppermint oil or swede (sp?) oil?

My father and I have used deep woods off for all parasites in the woods to keep them off of us. Just sure spray really well around your ankles, wrists, waistband, neck and hat where the critters like to crawl underneath your clothes to get to you. Usually we just sprayed all of of our hunting clothes really well including the boots and hat and let it soak in overnight and off we went. I hope this helps.

I don't use nothing just something for the skeeters. I just pull them off when I get out of the woods. If I get seed ticks then I just use rubbing alcohol and that gets them off.

Hey guys, I've been out alot this year scouting and looking at land. I've never used anything for ticks either but I started last month. As wet as its been they've been thick. I recommend armoring up until it gets cold.

I use "scent free" spray. Haven't had any problems. I've never had any luck at all with the battery powered units. Pretty much decided they weren't worth spending money on.

I have never used anything either. However just like Mugster said they are bad this year. I have pulled more ticks off of me this year than I think I have in my entire life.

A few years ago a logger told me he used diesel fuel. A dab here and there. I gave it a try and it worked quite well. I don't know about how game may react to it but it sure works to keep the bugs off.

I went and scouted my land probably four or five times and everytime afterwards I pulled atleast four ticks off. But I really don't think it matters if your in the thick woods or in a back yard. Just last year I came in from mowing my lawn and I pulled off seven on my one leg....just gross. I live in a huge neighborhood with only a couple trees around my house. I agree with everyone, they are really bad.

Well when I am not deer hunting I use off, it works ok. But was looking for something that would not spook the deer with the sent.

I hate ticks. Haven't been in em' for years. Blasted things! Last time I was out turkey hunting in MO I must have pulled off like ten. Are they bad here in the spring?

They are bad here all the time!! But in the fall we get those little seed ticks about the size of a pen head! Those are the ones I hate.

Permerthrin, as mentioned earlier is the best thing you can use.

You spray your clothes and gear with permerthrin and let it dry. Don't put it straight on your skin! If a tick or chigger or skeeter touches your clothes THEY DIE! I have sat during turkey season and watched deer tick crawl up my pants leg. I waited to see how far he could get. He didn't make it past my knee and he was cold dead. These were pants that I had sprayed a couple weeks before. The can says it stays on through so many washings, but I always reapply after washing. It does not smell after it dries. I have used this stuff for 10 years through bow hunting and turkey hunting in Tennessee and all year long in Florida.

In 10 years of bow hunting, turkey hunting, scouting and hog hunting in Florida swamps for 5 years I have found ZERO ticks on my skin when using Permerthrin. I got a tick bite last year while picking blackberries because I only used OFF and some 100% DEET. I pulled 10 ticks off my clothes and one of them ended up getting me on the butt. I buy mine at Wal-Mart or Bass Pro Shops. I use the Repel Pemanone in the blue and orange can. I used to have the Army issued stuff, but ran out years ago. Both have always worked for me.

I'll have to try that stuff. Does it seem to be truely odorless to the deer while you are bowhunting?

I believe it is orderless when dry. I am a little freaky about smell when bow hunting and I still use it. I have sniffed and sniffed and don't smell anything. I spray my clothes down, let them dry, store them in plastic bags with fresh pine branches and then spray them with scent killer just before heading out. I hate ticks, but I wouldn't use it if I thought it was running deer off.

I use sent blocker so I wonder how that will work for me? Heck though I am going to give it a try also! Going today to get some!!

I use permanone.

It's been no issue as to scent while bowhunting and keeps those seed ticks to a minimum.

I went in the woods yesterday to hang a stand, spent about 3 hours out there and didn't get one tick. I'd like to thank OFF for that...stuff works good...just a little bit on the strong side as far as smell goes.

Permanone, permanone, permanone-if you ever hunt where there are lots of seed ticks(AEDC, Chuck swan, etc.) you will learn to really appreciate it. It is the only thing I have found that really works.

I used Repel sold at Wal-Mart for years on almost a weekly basis in the Mid-Atlantic and North East where lime disease is bad. I lost a great Lab to limes and a number of friends had it. Repel worked very well. If you don't wash your clothes it will last for several weeks.

I generally use the Max DEET stuff and that works, however the one time I didn't last year I got eaten up with ticks, and came down with Lyme disease to boot. Nasty stuff. Thank God my cousin is a doctor.
