Burress Sentenced to Two Years, But Not For the Obvious

Recommended Posts

Yes, I know what the technical charges were, and how the permit was expired and didn't apply in either NY or NJ. But was struck me thinking about this story is in a practical sense he was sentenced to two years in jail (and the loss of ca. $10 million dollars) not for violating the law but for unsafe gun handling.

Know what I mean? That's pretty sobering.

So Vick gets out and Burress takes his place. Burress may never play again you know -- for all sorts of reasons.

Saw a picture of him leaving the courtroom flanked by his lawyers - he's a freakin' Giant! (no pun intended)

If you think about it, Burress and Vick should have tried to server their time together. They could have been practicing 1 yard out patters and had them down like no other when they returned to the National Felons League. :panic:

Im not a Plaxico fan, but him getting 2 years(especially since he took a gunshot wound to the leg already) is absolutely rediculous. There are rapists, drug dealers, and child porn vendors that get less time....our justice system is so f'd up.

Yeah, I was kinda thinking the same thing. It's like, I know he could have hurt someone, but he didn't, he was just stupid. He'll be like 34 or something when he gets out. Doubt he'll play again.

He got what he deserved - what would you or I have gotten for a gun in New York?

I believe he was facing up to 15 years.

I dont think it was fifteen...but if convicted his minimum would have been 3 1/2years. The earliest he can get out is 20months. I mean for cripes sake he shot himself in the leg thats almost punishment enough.

He got off lucky; he cranked a round off in a bar. Him (and everyone around him) is lucky no one got killed

Mexican carry…WTF.... Typical thug.

Probably the offense he pled to had something to do with it. I think the OP suggests that as well.

This guy had the money to get a NYC license if he wanted one. It isn't that hard for a multi million dollar athlete to get a plush NYC Manhattan condo and get a pistol license to keep one at home and take to the range. If he really wanted to pull some strings with all his money and start a business, he could get a real NYC carry license. NYC is actually quite a bit safer stat wise than Memphis and Nashville also. It doesn't sound like he was wandering around the ghetto of Harlem. The athlete, if nothing else, could afford plain clothes off duty NYPD to escort him for protection in NYC and plain clothes off duty NJ LEO when he is in transit in NJ. He can have a handgun at home in NJ. I don't have a lot of sympathy for someone with all that money with many more options for protection than me in both New York and New Jersey. I cannot afford a condo in Manhattan to establish 'residence' to keep a pistol legally with a license in NYC, no financial ability to hire off duty police. I would just have to take pepper spray and a pocket knife to NYC to be legal.....I just see a typical arrogant athlete.
