Car Crashes

For those that have "experience".... what happens? As you can probably tell, someone in my family had a wreck today, she is fine, so is the unborn baby and my youngest is fine, but her van took a nice header. Crumpled the hood, bumper, and driver side fender, crushed the grill and one of the headlight assemblies, but can still be driven! No fluids leaking, no fan issues (the fan is facing the passenger wheel and was not hurt at all) She hit a new Jeep Grand Cherokee, left scratches on it. According to the traffic police, she is at fault, failure to keep a safe distance, are at least they allege:D. So what am I up against? We have had the same insurance company and agent for 11 years, we have both cars, our homeowners and life insurance with this company. No points, no claims. Any ideas on how much our rates will go up?

That would be almost a 40% increase in my overall premium :taser:

I hope State Farm is not your company. I personally know of 2 cases in which they cancelled the long-time policies of people after one claim. One was a friend of mine whose house burned. The other was my mother-in-law, who was faulted in a wreck.

Farm Bureau has been very good to me after a major wreck. So it makes a huge difference in who writes your policy.

Good luck! I'm glad everyone was okay. Everything else matters so little in comparison to their safety and well-being.

No, not with State Farm. With a smaller regional carrier, American National. So far, according to the wife, they have been very nice and helpful on the phone.

My wife and I have State Farm, and have had around 5 claims in the last 2 years, and it still hasnt went up. None of those were accidents, but still we filed claims!

in my past experience with auto insurance, some companies offer forgiveness for a first claim based on how good your driving records are.

The worst that they will do is knock you up twenty bucks a month or so in all likely hood. The at fault incident stays on your record for three years I think. They will eat some of it and you will too in the form of a higher premium.

Personally I would not lose sleep over it.

I have Farm Bureau, and have never experienced a rate increase due to automobile accidents, or speeding tickets, etc. However, my insurance did increase when I added my first wife to my plan (under 25), then it increased again when I took her off of my plan (notice I said first wife :stir:), then it increased again when I added my second wife on my plan (she had just had an accident and was coming over from another insurance agency). So the myth that your insurance will drop when you get married is bogus. And to top it all off, my rates never decreased when I or my 2nd wife turned 25. But with all of that said, I still can't find a cheapier insurance company than Farm Bureau for all of my needs.:taser:

I've been with State Farm for almost 16 years. I've had several claims on my auto insurance (1 was my fault and was fairly bad) and 1 claim on my homeowners insurance. My rates have never gone up, my policies were never canceled and I have always received excellent service and support from them.

My insurance finally went back down last year after a major accident I was in 4 years ago... (wadded a 2000 Tacoma 4x4 up like a ball of tin foil). Then I got married, and it went up again (wife is under 25).

Never have been dropped from insurance, I've had several carriers over the past 10 years... simply looking for the best rate.
