Looking for eye Dr in Nashville who knows shooting

I live in the Nashville area and have worn glasses all my life. I am looking for an optometrist or ophthalmologist who is a shooter or understands the vision requirements of a person who enjoys the shooting sports. Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks.

First, don't go to an optometrist for this. Most decent opthamologists should be able to help you but may recommend a different set of glasses or contacts just for shooting (I would steer away from contacts as they may "attract" gunpowder residue, but that's your call). Lasik is also an option but once again, your call.

I would suggest making an appointment at the Vanderbilt Eye Institute and see what they can offer you.

I live in Nashville and went to Dr Sites in Clarksville. The reason I went to him is I couldn't get any doctors here that understood trying to see sights on a pistol.

Dr Sites is a shooter and understood my problem and took the time to talk to me. He gave me several different strengths of contacts to try out. He said if the contacts didn't work for me he would order some glasses that would.

After trying the contacts I have mixed feelings. They work perfect for shooting pistols but when I look thru my Eotech all I see is a big fuzzy ball. I have to remove my close distant contact or move it to my non dominant eye to use the Eotech.

Was really pleased with his service.

It's not guns, but I shoot cameras professionally. Last year I got bifocal contacts, but have not been that happy with distance vision. Last week I had my annual exam and we confirmed something I had kinda noticed before. I primarily use my right eye fir distance vision and left eye for close up. Possibly I trained myself to do this from tears of videography and still photography.

Anyway, I now have a standard soft lens in the right so I get the best possible vision for photography and the left has a bifocal lens.

Thanks for your comments. I appreciate your help. One of the things I find great about shooters (and that non shooters miss) is the willingness of everyone to help and share their knowledge. thanks again.

I wear bifocals and shoot snubbies. I went to my eye doctor and explained the problem (Do I see sights or target? Can I do both?) Answer was , nope! If I raise lower lens (close) high enough that I can see sights (or even gun clearly) without craning my neck then I will go absolutely bananas when driving a car! I can do it if I use the modified glasses just for shooting. I will need my regular glasses for walking and driving. So now. if and when I get into a Self Defense situation, I have to change glasses before drawing my gun? NOT! I have started using a very fuzzy sight picture for practice and keeping the neck straight and distance vision scan going for situational scans and awareness.

Target shooting, where you don't have to walk or run any great distance or drive a car as part of the scenario, you could probably do with the 50/50 split bifocal.

thanks for the name of Dr Young. You are right he is closer. Plus, I really wanted a Dr who understood shooting. Thanks again.

The best eye surgeon in town is Ira Shivitz. He fixed both a my cataracts and I am NOT a good patient. He will take the time to listen and work with you.

I don't know if he's a shooter, but he's a professional, 100% and he did a good job on my screwed up eyes.

Just out of curiosity, what's your rationale for this statement?
