For purely target shooting purposes I see no problem with it. Many of us who practice shooting ambidextrously for "injured shooter drills" would be hampered with that sort of grip design.

While my XD grips are of course symmetric, I keep decal grip on the right handed side, none on the left, making them a tad "asymmetrical".

- my hand doesn't really reach totally around it, and most of the grip is obtained from right side, front strap, and thumb contact

- it doesn't sand off my hip carrying IWB (I don't wear undershirts).

Handgun combat grips are frequently asymmetrical. There's a cutout on the left grip to allow speedloaders to be used.

Putting thumbrests on grips automatically doubles a manufacturer's inventory complexity, and complexity costs money.
