10/22 Receiver

I have a 10/22 that is nearing its 35th birthday. I love this gun. But for as long as I can remember, it has had these chips in the finish of the receiver. I know my dad bought it new and I inherited it when he passed but I shot it all throughout my life. I really want to do something about these chips. What are my options on this? I have heard that Ruger powdercoats the new receivers. Is this true? Could I tear it down and have it blasted and powdercoated?

Thanks

They call it "Black Matte", but it's really just more of a paint, starts coming off down inside receiver on first shooting. Seems to stay on barrel pretty well, but once enough of it peels off outside of receiver, a lot of folks just strip it down to the metal. It's the same on many of the models, although some of the more expensive ones are actually blued I believe.

It's nothing like say, the black finish on their revolvers, or the black finish on Remington shotguns (which I believe is indeed called powdercoating).

Whatever it is, you do NOT want that exact same thing on your old baby.

I just did one for a guy in Missouri. I figured you could annodize these but you cant. Tried it twice but it came out a beautiful Olive drab both times. It seems the receivers on 1022s arent made of the finest aluminum billet. Anyway put Brownells oven bake black on with a small airbrush and baked it at 275(I think) for about 30 minutes and after cooldown it looked great. Stunk up the whole house though. That is some foul smelling stuff when you heat it up. Thanks, Jack
