Looking for a longer barreled .223 ar upper 22-24". I kinda want a 1 in 7 or a 1 in 6.5 twist so i can shoot the 80-90gr stuff if I want. I definitely want to play with the 75 amax and the 75-77 sierra. If I could punch 75gr at 3k out of a long barrel thats entertainment.

Anyone know of a quality off the shelf upper with close to those specs?

I like the RRA stuff. Not sold on the 1 in 8 twist though:

From what I can tell, most of the popular brands have 1 in 8 or 1 in 9 twists on their "hunting" barrels. This includes bushmaster, dpms, RRA, armalite, etc.

It looks like I'll have to order a barrel from someplace unless i stick with a 1 in 8 twist. I was hoping to keep the cost somewhat reasonable, but, what ya gonna do?

Talk to Frank White at Compass Lake Eng. or John Holinger at White Oak Precision. Do your research on the 90gr bullets, but I will tell you that they ain't all that they are cracked up to be.. plus.. if you poke around enough.. you will find that the 90's will shoot in a 7.7 twist. If you plan on shooting the 90's you will need a single point cut barrel with actual correct cut twist and an Ackley improved chamber to shoot them. Button cut is out of the question. Just stick with the 80's. The 80's shoot great in an 8 twist barrel. Also, for long range, you will need a min. of a 26 inch barrel if you want to save yourself some heartache. Since Your from Murfreesboro, look up Ronnie Morris, he is the best service rifle smith in Tennessee. Or Alan Strachn in Crossville. If you want to shoot the heavy bullets, you will need also a Wylde chamber in your barrel. Factory setups are just not satisfactory enough for long range shooting. If you want to talk give me a pm with your phone number.. would be happy to talk to you over the phone.

I might do that if I get more serious. I am considering an AI chamber, but I'm still sweating the twist and the length. I'm not looking for a 1000 yard line gun, but I do hear your bugle call. :hat:
