Squirrel Season

I used to hunt them with my compound bow with "flu-flu" arrows and "karate" points. Scared the crap out of several, but never got one with bow. I'll stick to my "lead launcher" thank you!

I've been on the lookout for a .36 cal smoke-pole for a while for the skwerls.

Any recommendations?

I really do want to get into black powder (NOT inline stuff) hunting this next year, to compliment bowhunting.

I used to hunt them with a 20ga O/U. Hunting them with black powder has to be fun, but I only have a .50cal

After my son and I get a few hunts in with the .22, I am going to have to try my bow. That has to be awesome practice for the deer bow season.

.32 and .36 are good rounds for "Tree Rats". I shot one with a .50 cal once because he was annoying the crap out of me while deer hunting. The aftermath wasn't pretty, so I don't reccomend .50 for squirrels!

Yeah, I imagine a .50 cal would produce instant squirrel gravy. :drama:

I make a flour batter and drop them in a frying pan. That is the only way I have ever had them. Then after they are finished cooking make you some gravy with whats left over in the skillet.

Oh God, I am getting hungry.

Easy way to cook outdoors just over fire assuming you're got something to hold the pot: just slow simmer half-squirrels in enough water to cover everything, throw in onions, carrots, whatever you've got, then at the end add "easy dumplins" by just taking canned buscuits, tear them into thirds or so and dump those in till cooked but still nice and soft.

If i'm going to hunt squirrels seriously for the pot and don't want to damage meat, I would use a 22 rifle. It is easier to get a clean head shot or even through and through body shot on a squirrel. I use a scoped rifle. Shotguns with birdshot are nice in the early part of the season with all the leaves when you catch them on the run. Some places, like Shelby Forest State Park, you can only hunt them with a shotgun. I'm real excited about squirrel season.

A good shotgun also doubles as a good snake gun early in the season when the snakes are still out! Birdshot works wonders on copperheads.

A good "headshot" on a squirrel at about 30 yards with a flintlock rifle, shur duz a man proud! Until the hunting gets tough and ya have to break out the scoped Savage .17 HMR!!!
