Reloaders, storing your loads?

Or more specifically, at what point do you quit using cartridge boxes? I've been loading small batches, working on a load that I liked. I finally settled on one for 9mm, and have started loading it in bulk. With my small 10-20 round batches, I used cartridge boxes to hold them. Now that I'm looking to load and store a few more than that, the boxes are beginning to look unnecessary. I keep all my ammo in surplus cans, and I can fit a lot more loose ammo into a can than I can ammo in boxes. The one thing I do like about the boxes, though, is that it's an easy way to keep track of how much ammo you have, opposed to just loose rounds in an ammo can.

So when you load up a few hundred of one caliber, with one specific load, do you use cartridge boxes, or just toss the loose rounds into a larger container?

If your loading that much plinker stuff in 9mm or 38, surplus ammo boxes will work. For my bigger hunting rounds, I just use the plastic shell boxes made to hold that size round. MTM or such. Available on most sites like Cabela's or any reloading site.

No matter what you store them in, make sure you keep the load data in the box with them somewhere.

30 cal ammo cans hold about 1200 9mm rounds. From these I load up 100 round dillon boxes for matches.

FYI 1200 rounds of 147gr 9mm cartridges weighs a few pounds ;)

i store my pistol rounds in a disposable tupperware container. they hold about 500 rounds a piece, maybe more. i started using throw away ammo boxes and wrote the loads on the box. now i know what i am loading and dont really change it much. i do write my load on the plastic container. for more than that, i store them in blastic bags in a 7.62 ammo can.

rifle rounds get plastic factory carriers for match rounds. dont do those too much anymore. surplus type reloads just go in a good ammo can.

Definitely. I'm using the plastic boxes right now, with stickers on them. I'll be labeling the containers for sure. The ziplock bags sound like the way to go.

Ziplock bags in ammo cans!

I put 100rds per bag.

This is the same thing I do. The ziploc bags even have a nice spot to use a sharpie on for your load info.

I use coffee cans. I got the woman hooked on "chock full-o-nuts" coffee in the big metal tins from walmart. Makes excellant storage for loaded rounds or brass. I have 4 or 5 loads that I "keep in stock" so when the can gets low, I load up some more. You could throw dessicant pack in there for long term and tape the top up.

For hauling to the range I use the smaller cans. I also have a couple premo plastic boxes for really good ammo, but, its not like I load long range stuff where some tiny scratch will throw me off 4 more inches at 800 yards. So I only store the odd lot of something in those.

I have bought blank, white ammo boxes with styrofoam inserts for the ammo that I load from Midway. The price isn't bad, and I like having my ammo organized like that. When it's stored neatly in a box, I don't think the casings oxidize as much -- they stay shiny longer. Anyway, you can buy boxes for a reasonable price for just about any caliber.

keep or collect factory ammo boxes. put my reloads in those for longer storage or back stock. one's ready for range go into MTM plastic boxes. Factory boxes are free if you collect them from range. otherwise, use folger's plastic coffee containers for storing just about anything. The big one's like you get at Sam's Wholesale.

Since I'm single, have no job, and am independently wealthy; I just grab one of my 5 gallon buckets, caliber of choice, and head out to shoot......wait.....(head shake)......good morning....what a dream.....

I gotta go now, my wife is yelling at me because I'm late for work.

Same here and have done it for years. When one loads 500 plus rounds at a time the ammo boxes starts to seem expensive and unneccessary. Since I relocated back to the land of humidity (TN) I have been taking the little dessicant packs from my wife's rather extensive collection of shoes and shoe boxes and putting them in my zip loc baggies with the ammo. Overkill? Maybe, but since my ammo locker is in the basement I'd rather be safe than sorry.
