Question on Overlap of Effective Scope Options

Recommended Posts

Just curious. What distance in yards would you consider the outer limit of effective range for a quality red-dot scope, presumably letting an traditional optical scope take over from there?

I'm guessing maybe 50-75 yards? No real reason for asking--just curious.

How big a target? Which red dot? I've got an Eotech that I like alot. It's got a 1 MOA aiming dot and under the right conditions there's no reason I couldn't expect to hit, say, a deer's vitals at 100yds. My eyes aren't what they used to be so I'm sure others could do better.

I'll add the the weapon the Eotech sits on is not intended for anything beyond 100 yds anyway and inside that is better. I've just gotten used to at least SOME magnification and crosshairs for most applications where shooting at anything where any kind of real range is involved.

For hunting? 100-120 yards, imo, if you have good eyesight.

I had pretty good luck with a 3 MOA dot out to 250 yards off a bench. Basically I was shooting at a 8.5x11 piece of paper with a bulleye on it. It roughly covered the bullseye, so i knew if i couldn't see any of it because of the dot covering it, I was pretty much right on it. I wasn't shooting a group per say, but I hit the paper pretty easy.

My experiments with it lead me to believe its ultimately about the same as shooting iron sights. Maybe a little slower for me, but I only used it maybe 15-20 times total. I stuck it on my shotgun at the end and sighted it in for slugs, and there it sits. It works good for that. Its also good in low light.
