Laptop issue, won't shutdown normally

Yep, the one that just ran out of battery, see three word thread, it won't shut down, just started doing it a few days ago.

I hit Start, Shut off computer (I know ironic you have to hit "start" to shut down), Select Shut down and it just locks up, sometimes all the icons go away, somtimes it goes to a light blue screen and just sticks, not shutting down and I have to press and hold the power button.

I googled it, but none of the answers i have found seems to work (theres not many)

Anyway, any ideas?

Not going to work on it tonight, I'm tired, getting ready to snooze, probably won't get to it until sometime Sunday or Monday when at work.

There is a slight chance that the file system could be corrupted, but that doesn't really sound like that's the issue.

Sorry I can't be more of help, I've mostly only studied hardware.

Id run ccleaner on it and clean the registry. You can get ccleaner at download.com and it's free

Defrag and Checkdisk wouldn't hurt.

Open up "My Computer", right click your "C" drive, choose "Properties", select the "Tools" tab.

From there, choose "Defragment Now" to start the defrag utility, or choose "Check Now" to run checkdisk.

Checkdisk will tell you it needs exclusive access to the disk and will run at the next restart, so you may have to hold the power button down to shut the PC off and let it run at the next boot.

If you haven't already go to your dos prompt and type:

chkdsk /f /r

then it will say some stuff, if it asks if you want it to run when you restart, hit: y

after that, type:

shutdown /r

Basically this checks your entire windows file set for errors or corruptions. Most of the time, this will work. It may take anywhere from 15min to 4hrs depending on how much stuff you have. Since it's a laptop, I estimate 15-45 mins.

Ran this, took about 5 seconds shutdown correctly.

Ran that, along with Ad Aware, and Search and Destroy, AVG is our corporate anti everything software.

Always scared of Ccleaner due to getting rid of stuff, that I actually need. Might have to post the scan results if these other things still don't help.

checkdisk finished when it restarted. At first, didn't shut down properly, but then rebooted, shut down, shut down properly. Figured maybe all the settings wouldn't take affect until next reboot.

Got to go do scouts stuff, will start up later tonight, then try again.
