if you dont have a handgun carry permit, it must be unloaded and the ammo must not be in the vicinity of the gun. example, gun is in trunk, ammo must be in passenger compartment. or vice versa.

Without permit, loaded handgun/long gun possession is illegal in TN. On person, in car, on bike, whatever. Exceptions are hunting and other outdoor activity.

Law is simply:

39-17-1307. Unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon. —

(a) (1) A person commits an offense who carries with the intent to go armed a firearm, a knife with a blade length exceeding four inches (4²), or a club.

Car is not same as your home as far as firearm possession, even though it does fit under "castle doctrine". Sort of a paradox in a way, but what else is new?

If you have a hand-gun carry permit, you may have a loaded Rifle in your vehicle, but the chamber must be empty!

So say you go to the range and your Ak/AR is in your Carry case you can have a loaded Mag in the gun as well as the loaded Mags in the Carry Case!

So the rifle can be loaded, but Chamber must be empty!

Just to be clear that is on a long gun.

A handgun can be loaded with one in the pipe if you have a HCP.

Thank you for all the replys!

I have a HCP but I am looking for the law which address carrying a loaded hand gun in your vehicle. Anyone know where it's written?

Seems even the law officers have a difference of option on this matter.

A TN HCP gives you the right to carry your handgun (i.e. have it in your possession) ready to use in self defense. That means that while in your car, the handgun is in your possession, and therefore MAY have a round in the chamber. Otherwise it would be called a RCP (Rock Carry Permit).

According to handgunlaw.us it is illegal to carry a loaded firearm in any vehicle WITHOUT a permit.

Click Fallguy's link and read dude. It's going to be hard to argue that the loaded .30-06 in the gun rack behind the seat is for defensive purposes.

If it's not for defensive purposes, keep the chamber clear. They are looking to let us defend ourselves, but still want to stop idiots from trying to jump out of their vehicles and shoot at a deer.

Ummm...he said handgun, not long gun.

It is legal for the handgun to be loaded with one in the chamber.

Just for infomation purposed, here is a list of states from Handgunlaw.us where handgun carry is legal (including what, if any, restrictions on it) in a vehicle without a permit.
