I just finished watching The Pacific last night. Amazon had it for $39, so Santa decided I needed to have it.

I cannot recommend it highly enough. Everyone should watch this series, as Hanks and Speilberg have done a great job with it.

A lot of people initially complained that it was not as good as Band of Brothers. It was certainly different than Band of Brothers, but I thought it was every bit as good. Where the first series had the natural story of the men of Easy Company, The Pacific focuses more on a few individual men in the 1st Marine Division and their stories throughout the war. If anything, this series shows how different this theater was from the European Theater. They may as well have been completely different wars, and the creators did a great job showing that.

If you have not seen this series, you really ought to get yourself a copy, or at least throw it in your Netfilx queue. You won't be disappointed.

I couldn't agree more. My father was in the 3rd Marine Division on Guam and in reserve for Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He had two brothers, one in the 5th Division on Iwo Jima and one in the 6th Division at Okinawa. All of them saw combat service. I was looking forward to this series, watched it when it came out, have it on my DVR and am buying the DVDs. It gives you a feel for what these men went through. Neither my father nor his brothers ever really talked about their service other than in general terms, so this gives a picture to put with all the books I've read regarding what it was like.

My father was 17 when he enlisted on November 10, 1942, the Marine Corps birthday. He enlisted after hearing that his best friend from High School, Quinn Curry, was killed in October 1942 on Guadalcanal. He was one of the millions of regular working class guys who answered their country's call and helped to defeat the tyranny of Imperial Japan. I could not be prouder of him, or all the others who served and sacrificed that I might be free. May God bless them all.
