I noticed this book in Target the other day in the kids books section. :) I picked it up and leafed through it...I have no words

Amazon.com: Barack (9780061703928): Jonah Winter, Ag Ford: Books

Well, I don't think anyone need fear it, as those who will achieve, regardless of color, creed, etc, aren't going to need such a book to inspire them. And a person who won't go beyond a certain level, i.e. the proverbial slacker, isn't going to be inspired by this.

Let's face it- the writer is the one we should emulate, as he has figured out how to play to poplular trends. Kool aid is the (yes, we all do it) overused but appropriate descriptor of trend followers (bet old Jim Jones, in his insane last days, never reckoned he'd give rise to a popular phrase in our language).

Even though I'm an old guy, I still like rock music, including alternative (also like jazz, some mix of country - not so much the pop country, but more old stuff). Anyway, one of my favorite songs, by the Offspring, has lyrics to live by. To paraphrase, I'm not a trendy, a-hole, I do what I want...

Only if more would be like that, LOL :D

The only response I have to that, DangerMouse, is that when a child reads this kind of book, he is more susceptible to the bold messages. Just look at all the D & D kids, Magic card playing kids, etc. Nowadays people, children especially, grasp onto anything that gives them purpose, as the moral fiber of fathers and mothers is weakened/lessened with each generation, moreso in single parent families, since these are for the most part mothers with their kids. There is no father figure and if there is one, a lot of the times its not a good one.

A perfect example of this moral decay is the use of foul language. You do it, and I do it, but I know my mom would tan my hide if I used it around her to this day. Grandma would have me cut a switch and then belt me with a wooden serving spoon, just in case. Times have changed, and young people emulate what is thrown in front of their eyes as good and wholesome. "Obama or Die!" Remember that jewel of a T-shirt that Sean Combs wore before the election? Kids and teenagers want to emulate the latest and greatest, and they are getting that from TV and the internet. There aren't a lot of places where they can go to learn conservative values anymore.

On the topic of Danger Mouse, one of the pugs is name Penfold :dirty:.

I understand and give a lot of credence to your viewpoint, especially regarding influence and yes, our coarsening as a society - language is a good example and I plead guilty. And my late Mom would have had a fit if I let loose around her.

On the other side, though, I have faith in human nature and think what we see as trend followers, i.e. those who will as you so aptly observe grasp at something for meaning, may be just what we see. I don't have kids, but have seen quite a few at the range, on the golf course, etc, and they are kids with a focus and purpose.

Bottom line, though, is whoever mentioned the Obama book being a "comic like" text is right - and the guy who is cashing in on this trend is riding the wave like a long boarder hangin' ten on the North Shore.

I am, I have to say, amazed at how folks hang on the every word about how to solve big-time economic issues from a guy who wouldn't know a pay roll tax from a firing pin assembly (in my humble opinion). Guess I am just jealous that I had to join the Navy to go to college and it wasn't Ivy League - stupid old me:D.

(or maybe we need Danger Mouse - or Secret Squirrel; dang, I am showing my age)

There are a lot of trend followers, then there are people who buy stuff like this as I posted elsewhere. I think the children's storybook won't lead to Obama youth, but things like it could lead to a storm surge. When I see courts letting mothers off due to insanity for killing there children, I tend to lose faith in humanity. Of course they were crazy. When you come across a rabid animal, you shoot it.

Your point is well taken and understood.

Wont' take long before this will be required reading in the public schools. Goes along well with the subtle daily mind control they put on our kids re: Channel 1, alcohol, tabacco, firearms, etc.

That is a scary proposition and not dissimiliar to how the nutcase islamic fundamentalists start out those who populate their lunatic legions.

I don't honestly expect that this book will lead to the Obama Youth or anything like that. It just seemed wierd to me - a total cult of personality thing. It reminded me of a piece of propaganda that you would have found in the USSR or North Korea or something like that.
