IN OBSERVANCE OF Constitution Week, Northeast State Community College, Blountville, will welcome U.S. District Judge J. Ronnie Greer to campus on Sept. 13 to discuss the American legal system from his perspective as both a private attorney and a federal judge in East Tennessee.

Greer was appointed as U.S. District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Tennessee in June 2003. A native of Mountain City, he graduated from East Tennessee State University. He received his law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1980. His legal career spans more than 25 years beginning with the Greeneville law firm of Hull, Weems, Greer, and Charles R. Terry Associates where he practiced from 1980-1981. He briefly left the legal profession to manage the U.S. Senate campaign of former U.S. Congressman Robin Beard before returning to private law practice in 1982.

Greer served as Greene County Attorney from 1985 to 1986. He was also a member of the Tennessee Senate from 1986 to 1994. While a member of the state senate, Greer served as chairman of the Standing Committee on Environment, Conservation, and Tourism and chaired or co-chaired several study committees including a legislative committee to study Tennessee's solid and hazardous waste problems. He authored and was the prime sponsor of Tennessee Solid Waste Management Act and was named legislator of the year by the Tennessee Conservation League in 1989 and by the Environmental Action Fund in 1994.

The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration has designated Sept. 17 as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day and Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week.

Greer's presentation will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the auditorium. Information, contact 279.7669 or email Jim Kelly, jpkelly@northeaststate.edu.
