Rant: Mcnairy County Sheriff's Office/Jail

Recommended Posts

It's really no wonder we regularly hear stories about habitual criminals around here. The system can all too often be a complete joke.

After allowing my daughter to visit with her mother - for the very last time if I have anything to do with it - I'm beyond pissed at what she has told me, and even more pissed at the lack of interest the Mcnairy County Sheriff's Office/Jail took during a telephone conversation this morning.

I'm not usually the narcing type, but because the Mother (used lightly) of my Daughter felt it acceptable and necessary to drag my daughter into some of her illegal activity, I felt as if I really had no choice.

Her Mother has a boyfriend who's incarcerated at the Mcnairy County Jail, and he has somehow managed to become a Trustee. From what I gather, he is allowed to "work" at a Public Park and a Recreation Center in the area. I have yet to figure out weather it's someone with the Parks Department or someone with the Sheriff's Office who's supposed to be keeping an eye on him while he's at either of these locations. Either way, they're not doing a very good job.

Whoever is in charge of him during these hours has knowingly allowed him to visit with family and/or friends on a very regular basis. He has even been allowed to be at either of these locations while whoever was in charge of keeping an eye on him decided it would be acceptable to leave an inmate unattended for extended periods of time. And when I say unattended, I mean the person in charge was miles away.

During at least some of these visits, my daughter's mother would bring him items such as fast food, cigarettes, beer, etc to these locations. I'm far from an expert on the matter, but surely this can't be legal. As if this isn't bad enough, the *beep* had the damn nerve to allow my daughter to witness this crap.

Anyway, I started the morning off with a call to the Mcnairy County Sheriff's Office/Jail, where I was greeted by a Grade-A douchebag. After asking to speak with the Sheriff, I was told that he didn't believe the Sheriff was in. He then asked what the call was pertaining to, which I politely summed up in one short sentence as not to tell the entire story over and over again. He then informed me that I would first need to speak with the Head Jailer - at least that's what I think he called him/her. Because I really wanted to go straight to the Sheriff, I was somewhat reluctant to speak with this Head Jailer, but feeling this would be better than nothing, I agreed and asked how I could reach this person. Things went South very quickly from here.

Before giving up any additional information, the telephone answerer wanted to know my personal information - mainly my name - which I wasn't really wasn't interested in divulging at this time. I didn't feel as if it was pertinent to my call. Afterall, people can report all kinds of criminal activity to Crime Stoppers without divulging your identity. Even though I didn't make the call to Crime Stoppers, I was treating the conversation as if I had. I honestly didn't see anything wrong with that.

After telling this person that I'd rather not give my personal information at this time, he quickly told me that there was nothing he would do for me. Even though I was nothing but polite during our conversation, I instantly felt myself getting more than a little frustrated, so I quickly and politely said OK and Thank You before hanging up.

I could not, and still can't believe they would rather allow these type of activities to go unpunished simply because I didn't want to give my personal information.

After doing a little searching on the Internet, this type of thing is nothing new to the Mcnairy County Sheriff's Office/Jail. A former jailer pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge for sexual penetration of an inmate and three felony counts of introducing contraband into a penal system. The McNairy County Sheriff and a jail administrator were also accused of intentionally freeing early the inmate with whom the jailer had had sexual relations so she could get an abortion. There are others, but you get the point.

I understand your frustration....and agree what is going on with the ex's boyfriend is not right. But having worked for a small county Sheriff's dept as a jailer (not the county I'm in now) it is not uncommon for a trustee to have extreme privilleges...even sometimes with the knowledge and/or help of the sheriff (not saying this is the case here though)

But...as far as calling and asking for the Sheriff...I will say you might be surprised how many people call and ask to talk to the sheriff, even about the neighbor's dogs barking, music too loud or other minor things, instead of simply asking for either a deputy or for a car to respond.

Also I imagine even if you had talked with the head jailer, had you not given your information I doubt much would have been said or done, although I would guess they already know for the most part.

I was thinking along those same lines, but I felt as if I had to do something. I was holding out hope that someone would actualy give a damn, but that was shot down in a hurry.

Some have suggested going above the heads of the County Sheriff. The Assistant District Attorney General, TBI, Department of Corrections were mentoned in the bunch. But do I really want to be "that guy"? I'll have to sleep on it, but I don't seem to be getting any happier as time passes.

Not only does this frustrate me because my daughter got put in such a situation, but it's equally as frustrating that our system allows criminals to get away with this kind of stuff while in custody. I thought these people were supposed to be being punished, not sent off to a summer camp.

Having free beer delivered while in jail? For some reason this whole thing makes me sick.

Write a letter to the sheriff.

I'm guessing it would hit the trash long before the Sheriff ever got close to his desk. This is a small town county jail where everyone is in on the BS together. I'm sure the word was spread the second I hung up the phone.

If someone was said, it won't take me long to find out. Her mother will have a pretty good idea of who made the call, and she won't be able to resist giving me an ear full.

Does Tn. have T.B.I. or some other state investigative branch? Call or write them. They might be interested. Of course you'll have to give your info. and it will probably be a long investigation (if undertaken), but I think this would be the only real solution. No county is going to investigate themselves.

I'd look for someone in the media that might like a story that could get them some wide coverage. I've seen stories like this grow and heads roll when the public finds out what's going on.

Triple, I am thinking along different lines. I would go to the courts and ask to have your wife's right to custody revoked. If she can't be trusted not to take your daughter on these little field trips, she obviously can't be trusted to keep your daughter safe. I really don't think you'll get anywhere with the sheriff department because of my past experience with them.

Lucky for me, she has no rights. No custody and no visitation rights.

She was/is going through some serious drug problems, and had a habit of allowing some very questionable men shack up at her house. The incarcerated boyfriend being one of many.

When he got thrown in the slammer this time, she promised she was going to straighten out her life. Well, I made a big mistake by giving her the benefit of the doubt. That will NEVER happen again.

On top of all this, I'm now finding out that she allows her 15-year-old son to smoke pot, and even smokes it with him. There's no telling what else is going on.

Telling my daughter that I can't allow her to see her mother is killing me, and something I hoped I'd never have to do. I still don't know exactly how I will deal with it, but she's left me no choice.

She currently lives in Hardin County, but I have a feeling they wouldn't care about this any more than Mcnairy County cares about the other stuff.
