In all fairness, the kid said that he didn't realize that gasoline was "explosive", not flammable.

It's pretty evident that he knew the gasoline was going to be flammable, but maybe he didn't realize the fumes could/would cause an explosion.

Either way, it was a very stupid move, Especially on the part of his Father.
