my new swinging target...

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

this is my new swinging target that i made! the metal discs ate 1 inch thick and the small round one is only 1/2 in thick. it can take the beatings of the 30-06 and 5.56! i use the small one for handguns because the 30-06 beats it up too much. the wood slides in and out for easy replacement and the discs hang on chains that bolt to it so you can remove the chains and disc from the frame for instalation. what i was wondering was if people would be interested in buying them if i made them. thanks picture posted below

Where did you get the steel, my82cam? Do they have holes in them from when you were shooting them?

no holes in them...just dents. the only one that will put a hole in it is the 5.56 on the 1/2 inch if you are too close. the larger 2 are 1 inch and it just dents them. there is a steel shop across the street from my shop and i got most of it from them. the chains are welded on to the discs and it seems to be holding up great! i have used it a lot and am very happy with it. it is cemented in the ground and it is very stable. the wood works great for sighting guns in on the bench.

i take a can of spray paint with me when i go shooting and paint the disc black, when you are at 100 or 200 plus yards, you hear the TING and see a silver circle where you hit it, it's a lot of fun with lever guns!

I've always wondered, what prevents the bullit from riccocheting off the steel and heading back your way? I see these steel targets all the time and am amazed that nobody gets hurt.

with the swinging target the bullet deflects and will not come back at you.

We shot a one inch steel plate today, 18 x 24 inches, anchored the plate with rebar so it was angled down just a bit. Nothing came back. All the rounds deflected down as they burst apart. It left a trench at the base but no ricochets back at us.

It is nice to here the ring or thump when rounds hit it. Instant feedback alright.

well....i have had some bounce back...i was 50 yards away and was shooting a 30-06, i was useing some remington core-lock and the steal jacket separated and flew back and hit the 4-wheeler i was standing behind...it dug a hugh piece or plastic out. all i know is i sure wouldnt want to get hit with that even at 50 yards! i did keep it, i should take a picture post it up for you guys to see. i normally use hornady ammo, when i shoot the discs at 50 yards i can hear metal coming back and hitting my truck, so you do have to be careful. the hornady puts some huge dents in the disc!! it's great ammo!

only hornady ammo comes back because it does some serious damage. and the jacket that came apart was from cheap ammo. it is not a normal thing, and they do hang at a little bit of an angle because the chains are welded onto the back or the discs.

you all be careful with ammo coming back at you. The target looks like a real nice set up. certainly better than what I had holding up my steel plate.

We shot mainly surplus ammo at 125 yards, the bullets were exploding when they hit the plate. There was busted up bullets all over the ground in front of the plate.

I think the 7.62X54r rounds were leaving craters, and the 7.62X39 and assorted pistol rounds were hardly even scratching the plate. Of couse the x54 was steel core, the x39 were not.
