That is exactly what I am talking about. The leases state that they may not have a gun. Also, it's illegal to be on the streets of the projects with a gun.

Would you go without one, though?

Got any documentation on that?

It's my understanding that public housing may not bar legal possession of firearms within the residence, but private housing may, as with any other prohibitions that the landlord may require in the lease.

As far as "being on the streets" with a gun, are these projects you mention posted or something? If they are city streets, legal carry of firearms cannot be banned on those streets. Obviously, anyone carrying a firearm without a permit is doing so illegally, posted or not.

In Nashville, you are not even allowed to enter the projects if you are a non-resident. An no, I don't have any documentation other than what I have seen in the news. However, I'm willing to accept that the news I have seen could be wrong. They've been wrong on so many other issues.

Well, I dunno.

But the part I highlighted just can't be right, surely.

If nothing else, I bet the Mormons go there. :-)

Seriously, though, would think it's unconstitutional, period.

I just looked at at lease off of Nashville Metropalitan Development and Housing Agency site, the controller of HUD funded "projects" and found no mention of firearms at all.

I can't find the lease form on that site for the projects, only for subsidized section 8 housing. I'm just going by what the news reports have said over the last few years here in Nashville. True? I don't know. Constitutional? My reading of the Constitution gets destroyed by the courts on a daily basis.

Well, some statements are just absurd on the face of it, regardless of who makes them, and "you are not even allowed to enter the projects if you are a non-resident" falls right in there.

So I live there and

- my brother can't come over for dinner?

- my mother can't come visit me?

- my girlfriend can't come over for a little of the old in-out in-out?

- my buddy can't come pick me up for work?

- my babysitter can't come over to watch the kid?

etc.

I'd think that the "life, liberty" part would cover that.

Jeez, I know projects are bad, but they're not barricaded like the Warsaw ghetto, even in Nashville.

It took me a while to do some research, but here it is. There is no law against visiting the projects per se. However, Metro's finest are loosely interpreting the laws in order to arrest people for criminal trespass in the projects as a matter of policy.

Secondly, I can't find the law but the US Supreme court recently upheld a law that banned guns in public housing in Richmond, VA. Also, the is a new US Senate measure to remove the gun ban from public housing. That makes me assume that one exists.

I'm not super computer literate so I'm not sure how to post links. But, If you google "gun ban "public housing"" and "nashville "public housing" trespass" you'll find many articles dealing with the two issues.
