I am not going Nuts in the last 4 days with my internet Connection. I got 6 months ago, the Basic DSL Pack. from AT&T, with a speed of 750 Bits per second, cheapest avail.

At first we could watch Movies over net and have not had any complaints, till recently, have an adapter into which i plug both the Linksys and the the wireless Modem.

When i first got it i would sometimes loose the conn. once or twice a day on an irregular basis, but in the last few days, i loose it 10-15 dimes a Day and have to flip it off at the AC adaptor for a few min. and then most of the time have to unplug the cord at the Modem in order to get it going!

Even when up it goes at a Crawl, takes 10 sec. to simply go to a page or

to post a Comment, and lately when i hit the send button, i have lost 4 posts on my end, since it will go down!

It is not my cheap Comp. my other ones will do the same, i simply wonder if all AT&T user's have this problem which really started really bad in the last 4 days?

Thank You!

Joe

Try plugging into the modem. That should tell you if it's the Linksys wireless. I have had to replace a couple of those over th years. If the speed problems, etc. continue while your jacked into the modem, then you have an ATT or a modem issue.

Sounds like the Linksys router to me. We're on our second one, right now. They work, and work well, but they have their quirks. I have the same package as you, but I've had it longer (When it was still Bellsouth), and sounds like the same setup. After a couple months we started getting dropped internet over wireless, but still having use of the network. It was usually fixed by doing a soft reset, which is unplugging and plugging it back up.

We had one SERIOUS issue, though, which required a serious reset. I have the instructions in a text file on an external hard drive just in case. It still works, but we got a new one after that.

If you keep having problems with the router, see if there is a firmware upgrade available and install it. If there isn't consider getting another router--another brand if you so prefer, if this turns you off from Linksys. Can't blame you if it does.

I also had the same problem with a Linksys, would loose internet a couple times a week until reboot, then daily untill it died, bought a netgear and it runs flawless!!!

DSL is old school but try the following:

1. Shutown computer and power it off. Disconnect power cord from wall and computer.

2. Disconnect cable from computer to modem/router from both ends.

3. Disconnect that adapter thing from whatever it is connected to.

4. Disconnect any wires going to any wall-jacks.

Wait about 15 minutes and start plugging stuff back in. In reverse order of above. Then turn everything on and try it out.

If that doesn't work call support.

I've been in the IT game for a long time and have seen some weird stuff when it comes to connections and diminished service. Wires get static built up in them and also just loose their strength.

I had this happen to a customers modem. Then it kept doing it after any power loss. My guess would be some sort of Cmos battery died.

Anyway a new modem fixed his problems.

i have to disagree about the cable/dsl thing... i'd prefer dsl myself right now although i'd rather have fiber (maybe that's because i work for Embarq...) Either way, a 768k connection will struggle keeping connection because most modems are made for atleast 1024+ and under heavy load cannot continue checking the dymanic ip every hour like it's supposed to. Static would probably help vs dynamic but that being said without filters on all of your jacks in your home you're gonna experience some slowdowns (especially if someone is using the landline)

Don't know if your problem is solved, but:

1. agree on the Linksys. Had issues more than once with one (D-link was reliable)

2. If you cannot resolve by going back to step one and resetting up your system (often that works for me as a non-IT professional; but I was told to try that as final step prior to calling in a trouble ticket by some sharp IT folks), then do call ATT. I recently had some wacky issues and it turned out to be a fuse at one of the nearby ATT boxes!

Simple fix and it took the guy about 30 seconds, then bingo! all was good.

And keep track of what you try, in what order, in case you do go the tech route or if you solve it, should it occur again, you will have our own "tech guide" (sumpin' else an IT guy taught me as a lay person).

Quick way to prove it's the router: when you lose connection, surf into it:

http://192.168.1.1/

(this is just from your browser to the router, you aren't using the internet).

Probably under STATUS heading, you'll see DHCP RELEASE button at bottom, click that. Then after it frees, click the DHCP RENEW next to it.

If you're right back online, it's the router dropping things.

You can try updating or just refreshing the firmware on the router, sometimes that helps.

Go to Linksys and find firmware update, directions are there.

Hopefully this is the last update, despite being told over Phone by AT&T 2 days ago Modem was fine, Net went down again yesterday and today a Tech came and said Modem was Bad.

So hopefully all will be now be well!
