Question about AR building

I've been looking around at all of you guys' ARs and really would love to build myself one someday. Is there a guide on the net or anywhere that I can see what all I would need to buy and how to do it? I'm a very diy person and would rather build my own AR instead of buying someone else's.

It seems like the lower receiver will be the most important purchase and is the only one that I have to go through a gun shop to get, right? I'm thinking of going with the A2 buttstock, but the with A3 upper for the gadgetry I can involve...is this wise? I plan on long range shooting so I'd go with a .223 Remington and a free floating handguard. Would it pointless to go with a A3 upper if I only plan on long range since I will only ever really a need a scope up there?

Seems like I've got a new hobby...

Probably best not to even ask. In fact, stop thinking about it. Now! That's better, the long haired guy on the "I can't believe it's not butter" commercial is a safer thing to think of......carry on.:drama:

Now go talk to some of the NFA dealers and start saving up big bucks to get some of the neat things like silencers and AOW's (any other weapons). If you got the big bucks, you can get the fully's. Big bucks.....big!

My first purchase will be a lower...I think it's going to be a one piece at a time kind of thing. First things first, what do I need to consider when purchasing a lower? Caliber, barrel, anything?

Check out AR15.com. They have a build forum with tons of information.

I had a great time building mine. I think you will enjoy it.

I am a little confused, but if you are saying that you will be shooting long range with a scope then get the A3. I would get the A3 either way and if you don't want to use a scope put a rear sight on the rail.

For the most part caliber is determined by the barrel and the magazine and the lowers are the same. They make lowers that are marked "Caliber: Multi". I like that idea because you can put different uppers on it and the markings will still be accurate.

One exception is when you get to 308 uppers. They require a different lower because of the longer case length.

Others may disagree, but I think a lower is a lower, and I am not as concerned about the brand of the lower as the quality of the parts that go with it.

I think if you live in Winchester you have one of the best resources right in your area. I have not been there myself, but friends who have recommend Hero Gear.

I just meant the A2 style buttstock since it is longer, I don't know if there is a particular A3 size, but i don't like the collapsible type. I decided to go with the A3 upper since I could easily change it from long range, to assault. My dream is to one day own a .50cal...or join the navy, take special ops, then join sniper school.

Then you need to go to Hero Gear in Winchester. They can answer all

your questions on the subjects mentioned above.

Once you get your first AR done then you can do all sorts of things. You can get close to your 50 even in the AR platform! It's called the 458 SOCOM. No its not the honking big .50 cal like from the machine gun but does shoot half inch diameter bullets weighing from 86 grains up to 600 and all from a stock lower and magazine. Just get the upper with the altered bolt from Marty Ter Weeme or Rock River Arms.

Basically the OP inquired about how difficult it would be to build an AR15 (semi) into a M16 (full auto) when he was building his lower receiver. Which if you are not a 07/02SOT FFL then it would be illegal. Thats what it was all about.

actually now they make a single shot bolt action .50BMG upper for the AR-15 receiver, available with up to 30" barrels

Yeah I asked if I was right and described how I would do it...but wasn't sure if I was allowed to ask. After getting a few responses, I changed it myself. :)
