Looking for some good places to camp in the E. TN area. Will be tent camping and would prefer a place within an hour or 2 of Knoxville. Not really interested in GSMNP. Thanks!

Lots of campsites along River Road and North River Road along the Tellico River and tributaries. Well within your distance. This is Cherokee National Forest. This is off the Cherohola Skyway out of Tellico Plains. Be sure to check out the very nice gun display in the gift shop in Tellico Plains. The gun display is worth the drive.

I agree with olddogy. I just got back from a nice four day weekend at Citico creek in Cherokee NF. From OR it's about 140 miles round trip. If you go there look for campsite #10, it's a great location and just up stream from a nice spring for your water supply.

Citico has some very nice areas, also. Be aware of the road dust potential at some of those campsites. Some campsites are along paved sections and dust would not be an issue. Have fun where ever you go.

+1 on the Telico River.

I'm at home now grilling trout I caught there earlier today ( to being at home and not on the river).

Added later. Man were those trout good eating.

Another vote for Cherokee NF. The wife loves camping at Indian Boundary. It is a developed site with electric hook up, showers, camp store, lake, beach and bike trail. I prefer camping anywhere down there.

If you like tent camping out of your car, and having a few amenities like flush toilets, you can't get any better than Frozen Head state park between Oliver Springs and Wartburg. It's only 30 minutes from Oak Ridge, as pretty as anything in the Smokies, rarely crowded, got a creek and good hiking. Plus it's a State Park, so it's HCP-OK.

We can't carry in Cherokee NF can we?

I don't think so but to tell the truth I don't know since the laws have changed.

Indian Boundary is really nice, but it has a $20 per night price tag.

Frozen Head is also great, just stay in the rustic camping area for a little more privacy.

While I was there a few weeks ago (CNF) I looked everywhere for any kind of "No Firearms" or "Firearms Prohibited" signs and didn't see any. When I was younger we used to hunt there, but I don't really know what the deal is now.

Check out this thread.

Yeah I had seen that thread, so now I'm not completely sure. Apparently there is no federal law prohibiting it.

What kind of camping?

I have 100 Acres near Cherokee lake (2miles), Holston river (4 miles) and Clinch River (20 miles) 1 hour and a half from Knoxville. It only has a small creek on the land but plenty of places to camp and shoot all you want with no one to bother you.

Id be glad to let you stay a week or weekend. No electri or water thought. Just woods, land and hills.

Wow really? I might have to take you up on that. That sounds perfect. I'm just into tent camping right now.

Just spent 4 days at Holly Flats Camp Ground in the Cherokee NF, it was really nice. Hiked around 10 miles (round trip) to the Bald River Falls.

No potable water there anymore though, so be careful, glad we had our backpacking water filter.

Panther Creek state park in Morristown or Big Ridge state park in Anderson Co

Planning on taking my first trip to Big Ridge next weekend. Probably take the kayak and hit the Clinch Saturday morning. Hopefully these cool morning will last till after our trip.
