Looking to add a "survival type" whistle to my bag. Any ideas of a good one that is top notch? I want one that doesn't fail in poor weather, i.e. COLD WEATHER!

My son's Den Leader in Webolos, had a neat whistle at our last over weekend campout. This thing sounded like one of those air horns that use the can of compressed air, yet you blow it just like a whistle. It could be heard from quite a distance. I'll try to find out who the maker is.

I would go with just the plain old military survival whistle. Not only are they cheap (about $4 each) but they re quiet when not in use and very loud when you do use them.

Make sure you get a whistle that has something in it that moves or produces a tone other than a solid monotone sound. These old style whistles have a little cork ball that rolls around when blown causing the pulsing in the noise. That causes them to be more likley to be heard over a monotone sound.

BTW you can find them here

My survival whistle is the orange one you pick up at walmart or dick's for $2. It's got the compass, signal mirror, flint striker, waterproof match compartment & whistle. Handy and used in many different ways by me.

This is what it looks like:

Old thread but, we use the standard Fox 40 on our dive gear. They work great and it doesn't matter if they get wet. The ring on them holds up for a while after being in salt water but we usually use zip-ties to hold them on.

I just bought a whistle to use for my volleyball teams practices it is a black plastic that does not have a ball inside. I have seen it at many sport stores for around 6 bucks. My girls all hold their ears when I really hit it so I guess it is pretty loud and seems to be well built, and no cork ball inside to rot or anything.

just a thought,Rando
