Work issue

Background story- here at work, we have a mass email that goes out to about 100 people in our center. Mostly this email is spam about "mm i love bacon" to "bring me some cheese dip." Every now and then, someone selling an item will throw it out to the mass email just to see if anyone is interested here in the center. Last week i sent out a message trying to sell a bass guitar. At the bottom of the message, i added "for the firearm enthusiast, i might be interested in a trade."

Today i got pulled aside by my supervisor, warning me that my actions were being investigated. He said that several people were offended by my email and reported me to the GM. He advised me that i am not allowed to discuss any issue related to firearms here at work because they are banned in the workplace. We discussed a few things, one being the fact that people have open conversations about if abortion is ok or not, and the "benefits of weed" but it's not ok for me to mention the G word (gun).

Im being warned that pending investigation i could be terminated for even bringing up the topic, and that several people fear coming to work now that i mentioned the word "firearm" in an email.

What gives in this situation? Pretty silly imho

Sounds like you need a new place of employment. I find it pretty ridiculous that people are afraid of a word.

I don't understand where companies come off. It's not like you said you where going to bring it to work and kill everyone. Geesh this political correctness crap is going to be the death of this country.

im not really planning on leaving per say, but if they terminate me due to that.. i think that's pretty silly

Tell them you were offended about the abortion email and demand an investigation be opened. Or just let it go. Pretty stupid if you ask me, but sometimes you gotta know when to play and when to fold. It's sad that this is what this country is coming to.

If they terminate you because of that, it might be worth chatting with an attorney about any cause of action you might have.

Unfreakin' believable. Though I probably wouldn't have mentioned it like you did.

For the same reason I won't use an NRA sticker, although I belong.

glad i am retired "retarded". everytime i read this crap my blood pressure goes up a few points. glad i had my own business. customers and i have been known to pop off a few rounds in my parking lot. over a 1000 acres behind my business with no one there.

If you're afraid they might fire you then just apologize and tell them it won't happen again. I hate backing down but it's not the best time to be unemployed. Besides, arguing with management is pointless as they intend not to listen (sorry to all you managers out there).

I'd contact an employment lawyer and discuss this with them right away. The couple of hundred it might cost to get them involved will be nothing compared to the loss of your job in this economy.

While TN is a right to work state (ie they can fire you for almost any reason under the sun) having somebody knowledgeable in the exceptions to that rule to make sure you don't make some mistake in this process would be well worth the money.

When in Rome, do as the Romans. In other words... it's not worth losing your job over this.

Even if it does blow over, I'd start keeping an eye open for a better job.

(Never hurts to keep an eye out.)

I really cant believe we are having this discussion. What has our country come too? When a man gets "wrote up" for saying the word gun, somthing is wrong. I agree with what some others have said though, let it blow over, keep getting a pay check. And when somthing better comes your way tell them to get screwed. :tinfoil:

I feel pretty lucky! when I got my HCP I asked my boss, who also owns the company I work for, if I can carry my gun to work. She said yes, she also has her gun in her desk so it wasn't a problem for her at all. She just said to make sure I carried a gun that made a loud noise and a big hole. ( what ever that meant ) lol

If your boss was genuinely worried, he wouldn't have have brought it to your attention for fear of being shot in the face for engaging douche-baggery.

Just sayin'

If it's the company email, they own the content, including the ability to determine what is and isn't posted. There is no private email at work. But, do you have an employee handbook or posted (hard copy or electronic) on use of email and what is considered acceptable? Just thinking of how you can cool this down to protect yourself in the near term.

Is it 100% ridiculous that some would be concerned about a simple transaction offer that mentions a firearm?

ABSOLUTELY!!! POSITIVELY! You were not making threats or acting in a threatening manner. Maybe someone has it in for you and used this as a way to make trouble (would not be the first time someone acted in an underhanded way, I'd venture).

Worth losing your job?

Not in this economy, in my humble opinion. If you have options to look elsewhere while staying employed, then do so, because if they are picking and choosing which topics offend, you are in a tough spot. But my advice is try to cool this down, watch yourself, and if you can, make a move when an opportunity arises.

Last thing I'd say is get anything they tell you recorded in your own notes, keep copies of any emails that have been "contentious" (abortion, death penalty, anything) and take them home with you (email them to a home account, too), and keep a track of what you are told and by whom.

I feel for you - this just sucks.

Same thing where I work. Once they found out I have and use firearms I was informed I could not talk about or bring any reading material in while on company property. Seems some folks are even scared of the word firearm much less even a picture of one.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't someone fired last week in Washington for sending an email that contained comments on Asians, people with Alzhemiers, etc.? I heard something about it on the radio. It looks like your company and just about any other company out there is looking for the slightest thing to send someone packing. I can understand regulations against porn but to just mention the word gun? Sad, sad indeed.
