Nashville City Council bill to ban park carry - take action!

On June 16th Nashville City Council held their first reading of a bill to band park carry in Metro Nashville/Davidson county parks.

It had a 26 - 9 vote for passing the ban on the first reading. There were also 2 abstentions and 3 absences. Interestingly many aye votes stated they were not in favor of the bill but wanted to acknowledge the committe meetings that could occur after a first reading - so dont consider this bill as a sure thing to pass!

the following link has the roll call vote - CONTACT THE CITY COUNCIL and educate them - it has to be read two more times before it becomes a law. They meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month.

Just sent this to all the Council Members....

Dear Council Members,

While the newly passed Parks bill allows the local jurisdictions to post local parks, I hope this matter is going to be deliberated by the council with some individual consideration of each park and not just a knee-jerk blanket ban of ALL local parks.

Even Gov. Bredesen, in his letter to Speaker Williams expressing his desire for local action, specifically mentioned parks close to schools or where large numbers of children congregate. Dragon Park in Hillsboro Village deserves different consideration than somewhere like Warner Park with it's many walking trails through wooded areas.

Need I remind you that HCP holders in this state are not the problem. Criminals that will ignore your posting signs are. Please don't bunch the former in with the latter in your deliberations.

Thank you.

I just sent my councilman a thank you for being true to his word that he would vote against any bill that would limit our 2A rights. I also sent emails to the others that voted against it. I also noticed that Karen Bennett abstained. She had repeatedly replied to me that she was against all bills that would limit our 2A rights but yet she didn't take the opportunity to vote against this one on first reading. I asked to for her reasoning for abstaining. We''l see what her reply is.

I just wanted them to know that we are watching what they are doing. It sure would have been nice to kill it on first reading but I can see that they would want more discussion about it.

Technically speaking abstaining in this case is a 'soft' no vote... Unless it's an Aye vote, it's for all practical purposes a Nay vote.
